Gauciel brings together rural heritage and open landscapes with the presence of Base Aérienne 105. Several distinct themes can help guide your trip planning: the Manoir de Gauciel, Église Saint-Pierre, the GR® 26 long-distance hiking trail and products made from a red apple. This means you can tailor your stay to your interests in architectural history, nature, hiking or regional products.
Manoir de Gauciel: Enclosure and Architectural History
The Manoir de Gauciel features several distinct construction phases. The present-day square enclosure was probably built in the 13th century and contained agricultural buildings, including the barn and the gatehouse. A dovecote survives from the medieval manor; the barn was altered in the 15th century. The architectural evidence therefore spans from the presumed construction of the enclosure to the later alteration of the barn. By decree of 11 April 2008, the enclosure and its walls, the barn and the dovecote were listed as historic monuments. Also included were the ground of plots B1 and B2 in the cadastral section “Le Clos du Manoir,” including the pond area.
Église Saint-Pierre: Flint and Half-Timbering
Église Saint-Pierre dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and is built mainly of flint. A half-timbered porch stands in front of the entrance; the portal is crowned by a sculpted keystone. In contrast to the medieval manor, the church represents a different period of construction; its defining features are its materials, porch and entrance design.
Landscape and Long-Distance Hiking Trail
The landscape context is also specifically identified: Gauciel lies within the ZNIEFF Type 2 area “La vallée de l'Eure d'Acquigny à Menilles, la basse vallée de l'Iton.” The name refers to the Eure Valley from Acquigny to Menilles and the lower Iton Valley, placing the village within a wider landscape area. The GR® 26 long-distance hiking trail is also marked in Gauciel. These offer two distinct ways of orienting yourself: the designation of a regional natural area and a named long-distance trail. Those interested in nature or hiking can take these into account when choosing the focus of their trip.
Base Aérienne 105: Guided Group Tour
Base Aérienne 105 extends across 49 cadastral plots in the municipalities of Fauville, Gauciel and Huest. A guided tour of Base Aérienne 105 d’Évreux is offered for groups. The program includes a visit to the base museum, an overview of the base’s history and a look at an aircraft on the ground in the presence of a pilot. This tour offers a distinct focus for those interested in the history of the base and aviation. Plan it as a group activity and check dates and booking conditions in advance, as both may change.
Apple Products from Gauciel
The red apple provides a culinary connection: fruit growers Stéphane Van Tornhout and Martine in Gauciel imported a variety of apple with red skin and red flesh from Canada. At Le Clos de Cerisey, the red apple is made into juice and a Norman aperitif. The business also produces artisanal Rosé cider and homemade by-products, which are sold in its shop. For travelers interested in regional produce, both the fruit and its processing, as well as the shop’s products, are described here.
