Chaise-Dieu-du-Theil can be explored through two distinct highlights: the surviving remains of the former priory and experiences centered on water and trails. Before your trip, you can weigh up whether local history, outdoor activities or fishing experiences that require a reservation should shape your stay.

Water and fishing at Le Moulin

The grounds of Le Moulin de Chaise Dieu cover 12 hectares and include 3 km of river. They include Lac Émilie and five interconnected bodies of water, continually fed by the Iton. If you are planning a stay that includes fishing, it is important to narrow down the options in advance: at Le Moulin, you can fish with dry flies, boobies, nymphs and streamers. Fishing conditions and the services offered may change, so check the details before your trip.

Introductory sessions, seminars and fly-rod fishing are available by reservation. These activities therefore differ from something you can add spontaneously to your daily schedule. If you want to plan one of these, confirm your reservation in advance. The different fishing methods also give you a practical basis for deciding whether this is the right focus for your stay.

A circular route through the Normandy countryside

The 5.8 km “Autour de Chaise-Dieu” circular route starts at Place Albert-de-Selle-de-Beauchamp. The average duration is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The route is suitable for hiking and mountain biking; its paths are lined with hedgerows and pollarded willows, which are typical of this part of Normandy. Check the route details again before setting out.

The stated duration makes the circular route an easy-to-plan part of your day without turning it into a longer activity. This sets it apart from the fishing activities that require a reservation: an approximate duration and a starting point are given for the route, while reservations are important for introductory sessions, seminars and fly-rod fishing. Chaise-Dieu-du-Theil is also located in an area designated as a “site inscrit.”

Traces of the former priory

The priory was founded in the 12th century by Hugues du Desert and affiliated with the Order of Fontevraud. An entrance building on the edge of the village’s main road survives from the former monastery. A dovecote and other elements of the former monastery, less visible from the public road, have also survived. The distinction between the building by the road and the less visible remains offers a practical way to look at different parts of the historic complex.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean was the church of the former double monastery, located outside the convent. It was listed as a historic monument in 1971 and is owned by a local heritage-preservation association. The chapel contains paintings and objects from the former nuns’ priory. The church bell of Chaise-Dieu-du-Theil represents another period in history: cast in 1575, it was classified as a protected historic object on November 22, 1941.

The Mariette also recalls a specific historical turning point: it was rebuilt in 1826 after a road accident. Two niches define its description: a Madonna and Child to the west and a Deposition to the east. Together with the remains of the monastery and the Chapelle Saint-Jean, it offers another distinct way to explore the history of the buildings and the village. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus on the historical remains, the circular route or the fishing activities.
