In Saint-Laurent-Sur-Mer, memorial sites at Omaha Beach sit alongside opportunities for outdoor activities. The Omaha Beach Memorial Museum can be visited independently; Les Braves is accessible on the beach at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, and the GR®223 hiking trail reaches the beach after the American cemetery. History, coastal scenery and sport give a stay a range of different focal points.

Omaha Beach and its historical perspectives

Omaha Beach entered history as “Bloody Omaha” or “Omaha la sanglante” because of the heavy losses suffered by the US V Corps. The name recalls the losses among the troops who landed there and shapes the site’s historical significance. Les Braves adds its own perspective: the monument consists of three sculptural groups and honors the courage of the soldiers who came to liberate France and, beyond that, the world.

The Omaha Beach Memorial Museum is 200 meters from Omaha Beach and has a total floor area of 1,400 m². On a self-guided visit, visitors can see personal belongings from the period, uniforms, weapons, vehicles, photographs and archival documents. The museum also offers a 25-minute documentary featuring eyewitness accounts by veterans. The collection and its presentation may change in the future.

The Maison de la Libération also offers a different perspective on the site’s history. It was the first house liberated by the US troops who landed at Omaha Beach. The exhibition reconstructs the situation in 1944 using original materials from the 1940s, donated by families from the Omaha Beach area. By arrangement, the Maison de la Libération holds evening events featuring accounts from veterans, members of the Resistance and civilians. Arrange a date in advance; the program may change.

Les Braves is accessible free of charge all year round at Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. Check local access conditions before your visit. This allows you to experience the monument as a destination in its own right, with its three-part design and tribute to the soldiers, without reducing the historic site to a single story.

Coastal scenery and outdoor activities

Omaha Beach has diverse natural habitats. Their characteristics depend on their distance from the sea, their orientation and the nature of the ground. This gives the beach a scenic aspect alongside its history: these three factors shape different habitats along the coast.

The GR®223 reaches the beach at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer after passing the American cemetery. If you plan to hike the trail, check current trail conditions before setting out. Omaha Beach is also suitable for water-based and various other sporting activities; availability may vary seasonally.

Eolia Normandie’s base is in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer on Rue B. Anquetil. Activities offered there include coastal-water hiking, Nordic walking, trail running, hiking and fat biking. The program and availability may change, so it is advisable to check in advance.

A guided E-fatbike tour in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer follows Omaha Beach and passes Les Braves. This tour requires a reservation; availability may also change. Check the offer before adding the tour to your plans.

Dates and visitor information

In 2026, the seasonal D-DAY Night experience includes a nighttime museum visit and a virtual reality experience at Omaha Beach. As this is a seasonal offer, check the dates before planning. This experience differs from the historically significant sites that are there all year round and from activities whose availability may change.

The Ruquet car park is at the eastern edge of the village, in the direction of the Sapinière restaurant. Check local parking regulations before setting out. It is also useful to keep the different conditions in mind when planning: evening events at the Maison de la Libération are held by arrangement, the E-fatbike tour requires a reservation, and the D-DAY Night experience is seasonal.
