Saint-Germain-du-Crioult combines a clearly defined circular walking route with a rich religious history. When planning your visit, you can choose between two distinct priorities: spending time on La Voie Romaine or exploring the commune’s historic sites. Its landscape setting adds another dimension.

Landscape and circular walk

Saint-Germain-du-Crioult lies in the south of Calvados, on the border between the Bocage virois and the Suisse Normande. On a smaller geographical scale, the Tortillon flows into the Druance at the boundary between the communes of Vassy and Saint-Germain-du-Crioult. The description of the area thus brings together a transition between landscapes and a specific confluence.

La Voie Romaine is a circular walking route that starts in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult. The starting point is the church car park. The route is 12.1 kilometres long, rated easy, and listed as taking three hours. The distance describes the route’s length, the duration provides a time frame, and the rating indicates the stated level of difficulty. Trail conditions may vary by season, so check them in line with your visit. Local parking conditions may also change. If starting at the church car park is important to your plans, check the situation in advance.

Churches and heritage

The history of the Église Saint-Germain is marked by several clearly dated turning points. The first stone church in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult was built in 1185. The Église Saint-Germain was partly rebuilt between 1631 and 1635. In August 1944, it was almost completely destroyed; only the choir survived the explosion. The First World War memorial chapel was dedicated on 8 October 1922.

Another religious site is the Sanctuaire du Sacré-Cœur, located in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult and also known as the Sanctuaire du Divin Médecin. Today, 146 ex-votos associated with the sanctuaire can be seen in its rebuilt church. If you are visiting specifically to see these ex-votos, check current visiting arrangements in advance: their display may change. The history of the pilgrimage is also dated: the first solemn annual celebration of the Sacred Heart took place as a pilgrimage on 19 June 1903.

The history of the area also includes the now-vanished Chapelle de Gouvy. It was built in December 1650 and blessed on 9 February 1651. A local tale is associated with the Manoir de Gouvy: according to legend, the White Lady appeared silently beside a wall, right at the manor gate, about two kilometres from the town centre. This story is explicitly a legend.

The Manoir de la Hiaule is a private heritage property in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult. Tombstones are also among the sights you can discover in the commune.
