The history of Périers-sur-le-Dan can be traced through two distinct places: the Église Saint-Ouen and the Allées d’arbres menant au château. The small valley through which the Dan flows also connects the village to its landscape. The place thus brings together church and art history, a protected tree-lined avenue and a rural setting.

The Church and the Village’s History

The origins of the Église Saint-Ouen date back to the 8th century. The site also contains settlement remains from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. These traces point to the early history of the church site and should be distinguished from the building history of the church itself. In 1914, the Église Saint-Ouen was designated a Monument historique.

Another historical phase is evident in the choir: it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Frescoes depicting episodes from the life of Saint Ouen were painted on the choir walls in the 14th century. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between the Gothic reconstruction and the later wall paintings; the two refer to different building phases.

The more recent restoration history is also clearly dated: consolidation and restoration work in 1980–1981 made it possible to reopen the choir for the feast of Saint Ouen and the Heritage Days.

The Classified Avenues

The Allées d’arbres menant au château form another historical feature. The grounds cover four hectares and were designated a classified site by decree on 6 March 1942. Unlike the Église Saint-Ouen’s designation as a Monument historique, this classification applies to an area: two different forms of heritage stand side by side, a church building and a classified site.

A description published in September 2013 also mentions a short promenade there, with lime trees, benches and flower boxes. If these amenities are important to your visit, check the condition of the site in person.

The Valley and Choosing Where to Stay

The Dan flows through a small valley in Périers-sur-le-Dan. Nature, wildlife and flora shape the surroundings and provide a backdrop for walks. This landscape setting complements the built and artistic heritage without being tied to a single structure. As a rough guide, Périers-sur-le-Dan is a few minutes from Caen and the sea. This is another point of reference when situating the village for a trip in the surrounding area.

The main attractions can help you decide where to stay: Saint-Ouen brings together early settlement remains, choir architecture and frescoes; the avenues represent a classified area with a described promenade. The small valley adds a landscape perspective to these cultural sites. This can help you decide whether building and art history or nature and walks matter more for your trip.
