Mondeville brings together protected architectural heritage, a seasonal cultural program and green spaces with opportunities for running, playing and picnicking. These themes can help you choose the focus of your trip: historic sites, events or time outdoors. If you are looking for hotels in Mondeville, the specific places and programs can help you decide what you would like to experience during your stay.

Local history in buildings and streets

The main construction phase of the Vieille église Notre-Dame-des-Prés dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. On July 22, 1913, the church was classified as a historic monument. It therefore represents a long architectural history, while the Rue des Roches recalls a different, much more recent era: the street is considered a historic symbol of Mondeville.

During the Allied landings, from June 6, 1944, until Mondeville was evacuated on July 13, 1944, about 9,000 people sought shelter on Rue des Roches. Local stonework also has a history that extends beyond the town: stones from Rue des Roches, as well as Caen stone, were used to build the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey. Medieval architecture and memories of the Second World War thus stand side by side in Mondeville, without telling the same historical story.

Cultural offerings with different focuses

La Renaissance offers an interdisciplinary program of music, theater, dance, circus and street arts; events vary by season. One special event is the free three-day street arts festival “Plateaux Éphémères.” It has taken place in Mondeville’s streets every July since 2011 and is initiated and organized by La Renaissance. Check the specific festival dates if you would like to plan your trip around it.

Mondeville Animation also brings together a range of cultural and leisure activities. The organization offers workshops for amateurs in crafts, theater and artistic activities. Its cultural program also includes art and educational exhibitions, summer events, and the festivals “Tongs et espadrilles” in July and “Talents Aiguilles” in February and March. Dates may vary; the offerings are not limited to a single season.

Mondeville Animation is also the organization behind “P’tit Coin,” Normandy’s first café-theater dedicated to humor. Another cultural venue is Supermonde. Its subject areas include music, heritage, visual arts and graphic arts; it is aimed at professionals, artists and audiences in these fields. Check the program before your visit.

Green spaces, parks and running options

The Biez, initially called the Gronde, flows through Mondeville to the Orne. The town’s green spaces are maintained in a way that preserves biodiversity. There are two running options, described differently: the Parcours de la Gronde is five kilometers long; runners can follow a marked route in Parc Charlotte Corday. Check the conditions on each route in advance.

The parks also offer different features. Parc Charlotte Corday has a play area. In the southern part of Parc du Biez, there is a play area and a lawn for picnics on family outings. Along with opportunities for running, there are also specific spots for play and a picnic break.

Practical information for your visit

Supermonde is a ten-minute bike ride from the SNCF train station via the Cours Montalivet cycle path. Check the route and bike rental availability before setting out. It is also worth checking event dates to match your travel dates: La Renaissance’s program varies by season, and the specific festival dates should be confirmed in advance.
