There are several different ways to plan a trip to Merville-Franceville-Plage, focusing on military history, the dune landscape and nature along the estuary, or activities on the water. Consider whether you would prefer to focus on historic sites, walking trails through the dunes or guided nature experiences. The following highlights show which aspects of the town make these experiences possible.

History among bunkers and fortifications

The Batterie de Merville has been preserved as a fully intact historic site. A discovery trail leads between the various bunkers and brings their history to life. Its military role is connected with the Allied landings on 6 June 1944: the battery was a German Army fortification on the eastern flank of the landing area.

La Redoute de Merville offers a glimpse of a different era. The small fort is horseshoe-shaped and was built according to the principles of Vauban architecture to protect the bay. It was part of a group of three artillery forts built around the estuary in 1779–1780. The town’s history therefore includes two distinct military chapters: 18th-century fortification architecture and the events of the landings during the Second World War.

La Redoute also has an exhibition room about the town’s history and the restoration work. There is also a special exhibition that changes every year. As the exhibition program may change, it is worth checking what is currently on display before your visit.

Nature among the dunes and estuary

The dunes of Merville are the largest preserved dune complex in the Calvados department. Walking trails lead through the dunes and let visitors explore this landscape. Alongside the historic sites, this offers a distinct focus for anyone who would rather spend their time taking a walk in nature.

The Orne estuary is another defining feature of the natural landscape. It is a protected natural area where animal and plant species live according to the rhythm of the tides and the seasons. The Gros Banc bird reserve lies at the heart of the estuary and can be visited on a walk. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the aquatic habitats between land and sea in Merville-Franceville-Plage.

These nature experiences have different points of focus: the dunes can be explored via walking trails, while the estuary is a protected habitat shaped by the changing tides and seasons. Bird enthusiasts can also use the number of recorded species as an indication of the importance of the aquatic habitats.

Water activities and other experiences

Guided nature excursions are offered on the Orne estuary as part of “Voile et Pagaie.” Equipment rental and activities are also available, including paddleboarding, kayaking, pirogue, catamaran and dinghy sailing, as well as Longe Côte. The options range from guided nature excursions to a variety of activities on and by the water. Check current availability before your trip.

The Club Nautique marina is located at the entrance to the Orne estuary and has 200 berths. If you plan to use a berth, confirm availability before you arrive.

Horse riding is another activity to consider: Les Crins de la Baie offers rides in small groups. When planning, you can choose between nature, history, water activities and horse riding without trying to fit everything into a single itinerary.
