Vieil-Hesdin brings together a long urban history and walking destinations in the surrounding area. Its historical themes range from the market and wool processing in the 11th century to the remains of the Château des ducs de Bourgogne. Visitors can therefore explore both cultural attractions and landscapes; specific routes and a visit to the Manoir Marceau require different preparations.

Town history between market and wool

Since the 11th century, the community of Vieil-Hesdin has focused primarily on wool processing, alongside its role as a market town. Vieil-Hesdin was once one of the most important towns in Artois. Charles Quint destroyed the town in 1553 and ordered the construction of the new Hesdin the following year. Its history thus encompasses both the economic focus of the 11th century and the upheaval of 1553, followed by the order to build a new town.

Castle history and church

The remains of the Château des ducs de Bourgogne, also known as the Château de Vieil-Hesdin, are protected in their entirety as an archaeological reserve. They were listed by decree on 29 July 2005. The automata of the castle and park of Hesdin date from the late 13th century. Accounts from the 14th century describe them more as moving wooden statues, like puppets. The high altar, tabernacle and reredos are in the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vieil-Hesdin.

Manoir Marceau: visits by appointment

The Manoir Marceau is a private residence that is still lived in. It can be visited by appointment for enquiries and projects, as well as to access the boutique. Classes for all levels are also held year-round by appointment. Visitors can enjoy a platter or a meal in the garden or indoors. Arrange your visit and any requested services in advance, as these may change.

Walking in the surrounding area

A walk on the Saint-Georges plateau offers panoramic views over the Canche valley, with the Hesdin forest in the background. The view over the valley is the main highlight of this outing.

The walking route starts at the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vieil-Hesdin. It is 13 kilometres long, takes three hours and 15 minutes, and is of moderate difficulty. It passes the Chapel of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and the former Couvent des Sœurs Noires. Check the route details and directions before setting out.

Plan according to your interests

An appointment is essential for visiting the Manoir; for the 13-kilometre walking route, the duration and moderate difficulty provide a basis for planning your time. This allows you to treat the historical themes, an arranged visit and the walks as distinct highlights of your stay.
