At the Château in Saint-Martin-Choquel, Baincthun stone, the park-facing façade and partial protection as a Monument historique take centre stage. The Église Saint-Martin adds a medieval motte, a 1597 looting and paintings of the hunt of Saint Hubert to the village’s history. Le Champ Lart adds an easy 4.4-kilometre hiking trail. These features give Saint-Martin-Choquel a cultural and hiking-oriented appeal.

The Château: architecture and heritage protection

The Château is attributed to the architect Sannier Giraud. Its simple main building is made of Baincthun stone; the façade facing the park is divided into three sections. The material and façade design create different accents: stone defines the main building, while the three-part layout characterises the park-facing view. This makes it possible to appreciate the architecture through specific structural features.

Since the decree of 14 December 2012, the Château has been partially listed as a Monument historique. The protected elements are the façades and roofs, as well as the main staircase. A remarkable staircase railing is also documented as the only original element of the interior decoration. Two aspects can therefore be considered side by side: the protection of specified parts of the building and a surviving detail of the interior.

The Église Saint-Martin: local history and paintings

The Église Saint-Martin stands on a medieval motte. It was looted by Spanish troops in 1597 and restored in the 18th century. According to visitor information updated on 8 November 2023, two restored paintings depicting the hunt of Saint Hubert, dating from before the French Revolution, can be seen inside the church. The church thus brings together the history of its site, a dated historical event and a specific artistic theme.

The different periods can be distinguished: the motte describes the medieval site, while the looting and restoration belong to later chapters in the church’s history. The paintings add another perspective through their depiction of the hunt of Saint Hubert. Visitors choosing a cultural focus can therefore distinguish between the building’s history and historical events on the one hand, and the paintings on the other.

Le Champ Lart: an easy hike

Le Champ Lart is an easy 4.4 km hiking trail in the village of Saint-Martin-Choquel in the Pas-de-Calais département. Its length and rating provide two specific points of reference when choosing a route. Alongside the Château and church, it offers a hike with a clearly stated distance and difficulty level.

The highlights for planning a stay are distinct: the Château focuses on architectural form, materials and heritage protection; the Église Saint-Martin combines historical events with paintings. Le Champ Lart offers a different kind of discovery: an easy 4.4-kilometre hiking route. You can therefore choose Saint-Martin-Choquel according to whether you want to focus above all on architecture, church history or a hike.
