Discover Reclinghem through its landscape, architectural history and archaeology. The Les Romains circular trail passes through the bocage countryside along the banks of the Lys and climbs to the hills lined with the Haute Lys wind turbines. In the village, Saint-Firmin Church and the archaeological finds at Le Village offer further perspectives. For your planning, this gives you both a clearly defined walking route and dated evidence of the village’s history.

The Les Romains Circular Trail

Les Romains is a 7.9-kilometre circular trail that can be walked, starting in Reclinghem. It passes through the bocage countryside along the banks of the Lys and climbs to the hills lined with the Haute Lys wind turbines. Riverside scenery and ridgelines shape different sections of the same loop. The stated distance helps you assess how much time the walk will take as part of your day; as a circular trail, it returns to the starting point. The tourist office provides GPX and KML files. As their availability may change, check before setting out whether the file you want is still available to download.

A Cross by the Path

A concrete cross about 20 metres high stands on a slope beside the path in Reclinghem. It is regarded as a tribute to a soldier who returned home safely in 1942. This gives the trail, in addition to its landscape, a specific commemorative aspect: the cross is understood as a symbol of one man’s homecoming.

Saint-Firmin: Tower, Choir and Bell

Saint-Firmin Church can be considered through several dates relating to different parts of the building and its objects. Its oldest part is the tower, dating from 1682. Around 1700, a public collection funded the addition of the choir; the bell, Albertine Noémie Marie, dates from 1880. The date for the choir is approximate, whereas a specific year is given for the bell. These dates therefore do not refer to a single construction year for the entire church, but to different components and changes.

Settlement Traces at Le Village

At Le Village in Reclinghem, the first significant settlement dates back to the 10th to 11th centuries, at the beginning of the Middle Ages. Early settlement traces include several large wooden buildings. Excavations also revealed almost continuous human habitation from the Middle Ages to the present day. The 10th to 11th centuries mark the beginning of significant settlement; the excavations also show the long sequence of human activity.

Relics from the First World War include ammunition, tin cans and glass bottles. They are associated with British soldiers who buried their waste at a staging point between the Côte d’Opale and the Artois Front. Together with the early settlement traces, these finds represent distinctly different historical periods at the same site.
