Montcavrel brings together architectural history and a clearly described hiking route. The Église Saint-Quentin tells the story of medieval building phases and figurative art; the Fief d’Hérambault adds a later touch with its Neo-Renaissance architecture. Le Honlieu passes through the Forêt de Montcavrel and the Bois de Papenleu, offering panoramic views over the Course valley. Two distinct interests therefore come together in the village: historic buildings and a hike with scenic views.

Church Art and Architectural History

Construction of the Église Saint-Quentin began around 1440, and the entire building was listed as a Monument historique in 2011. In the western part of the Pas-de-Calais département, it is considered a representative example of Flamboyant Gothic art. Its figurative friezes depict episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the martyrdom of Saint Quirinus. The Chapelle de la Vierge occupies the northern arm of the false transept. After the nave was lost around 1715, the choir and one transept arm remained. The construction period, the loss of the nave and the surviving parts mark different phases in the church’s history. For those interested in architecture, both the development of the building and its religious imagery are central.

The Fief d’Hérambault

The Fief d’Hérambault is a château with a square floor plan and two levels. Alexandre Roubier d’Hérambault, a politician born in Montcavrel, had it built in 1845. Four towers are topped with pepper-pot-shaped roofs; architecturally, the Fief is Neo-Renaissance. As private property, it is visible from the road; check access again before visiting.

Comparing Two Buildings

Even when compared directly, the buildings remain clearly distinct: construction of the church began around 1440, while the Fief was built in 1845. At Saint-Quentin, the surviving parts, the loss of the nave and the friezes are notable points of reference. At the Fief, its floor plan, two levels and four towers define its description. Anyone interested in architectural history can thus view a medieval church and a Neo-Renaissance château as examples of different periods and building styles.

Hiking Le Honlieu

The Le Honlieu hiking route starts in Montcavrel at 3 Bis Rue de Séhen. The route description was updated on 30 April 2026. On the first leg, the route follows the road to the Château de Montcavrel. It also passes through the Forêt de Montcavrel and crosses the Bois de Papenleu; panoramic views open up over the Course valley. The route therefore offers a different focus from the buildings: woodland sections, valley views and the path leading to the Château de Montcavrel shape the hike.

Planning Your Stay

Traditional buildings are still visible in the village, adding a glimpse of Montcavrel’s character to the specific buildings described here. You can tailor your trip to your preferred interests without combining the hike and the buildings into a single itinerary.
