Lépine is suited to a trip where an outdoor route and architectural history offer different points of focus. La Cognée is suitable for both hiking and mountain biking. In the village, historic landmarks range from the 15th-century Nativité-Notre-Dame church and Château de Puits Bérault to the Grotte Notre-Dame de Lourdes, built in 1913. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Lépine, you can first consider whether the route or the architectural and historical discoveries will be the deciding factor for your stay.

Hiking and mountain biking on La Cognée

The La Cognée route leads to Puits-Bérault in Lépine and then runs along the edge of the Bois Mayeux forest. Hiking and mountain biking refer to the same route and offer different ways to explore it. The route links a named destination with a specific stretch of forest. If you are considering Lépine primarily for an outdoor activity, you can make your preferred way of getting around the focus while also taking these two route landmarks into account.

Architectural forms and history

The Nativité-Notre-Dame church dates from the 15th century; Château de Puits Bérault was built around 1840 by the de la Houplière family. Together, they span the period from the 15th century to the mid-19th century. At the château, the architecture complements the approximate date. It has a rectangular, single-storey layout and a 15-bay façade with a triangular pediment. The term “15-bay” describes the façade’s division into bays; “single-storey” and “rectangular,” by contrast, describe the building’s form. This makes it possible to consider the building’s external form and approximate date of construction separately.

The château’s history did not end with its construction: during the Second World War, it served as the headquarters of the Kommandantur. The construction date of around 1840 and its later wartime function mark two different phases in the history of the same building.

Farm complex, grotto and monument

The Ferme du Grand Pays shows another side of architecture. It is an example of 19th-century agricultural estates in the Pays de Montreuil. Its features include a rectangular, enclosed courtyard, a distinctive dovecote and strictly symmetrical architecture. Compared with the château, the focus here is on the farm complex and dovecote; at the château, the layout, façade bays and pediment describe the external form. An enclosed courtyard is a courtyard surrounded by parts of the buildings; alongside it, the dovecote is a distinctive individual feature.

The Grotte Notre-Dame de Lourdes was built from concrete and flint in 1913 and is located at the cemetery on Route de Colline in Lépine. In chronological comparison, the 1913 grotto is considerably later than the 15th-century church; concrete and flint also give the grotto a specifically named combination of materials. The Monument aux Morts adds an artistic connection: it was created by the sculptor Jules Déchin.
