Le Portel combines a sandy beach with protected coastal scenery, historic fortifications and maritime experiences. A museum, green spaces and local activities are also among the things to discover. This makes it possible to explore the area according to different interests, from the coast and nature to history and tradition.

Sandy Beach and Protected Coastal Area

Le Portel has a 1.5-kilometre-long sandy beach with fine sand. The municipality is also home to the 16.14-hectare protected coastal area at Cap d’Alprech, which is open to the public. Local access rules may change; check them before your visit. The path at Cap d’Alprech offers views of the sea. The beach and the cape therefore offer different coastal experiences: fine sand on the one hand, and protected scenery with sea views on the other.

Fortifications with a History of Their Own

Fort de l’Heurt was built by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. The Batterie d’Alprech was built later, between 1875 and 1880, to protect the port of Boulogne. Fort de l’Heurt dates from the early 19th century; the Batterie d’Alprech from the late 19th century. Both are part of Le Portel’s history of fortifications.

The Alprech fortification can also be explored through its individual rooms. These include the crew quarters, powder magazine and lamp room, as well as rooms beneath the crosswalls. Opening arrangements may vary. If you plan to visit these interiors, find out in advance about visitor access.

Maritime Museum and Local Traditions

The Argos Maritime Museum features a reconstructed ship’s bridge from the 1950s, complete with wheelhouse and radio room. The museum also offers a virtual reality experience aboard an offshore fishing boat. Availability of this experience may vary; check in advance when planning your visit.

Flobart trips are a seasonal connection to maritime tradition: during the summer season, the Barsiers of Le Portel take visitors aboard their Flobarts. Departures and availability may vary. Shellfish gathering, a local tradition among the residents of Le Portel, is also associated with Fort de l’Heurt. It is subject to tidal restrictions and safety requirements.

Green Spaces and Active Pursuits

The Parc de la Falaise in Le Portel covers 27 hectares of green space and has a minigolf course. Check its current availability before your visit. The Le Portel family centre also offers longe-cĂ´te (coastal walking) classes. As specific dates cannot be assumed, check the latest class schedule before travelling.

When looking for a hotel in Le Portel, the focus of your stay can be a useful starting point: the beach and Cap d’Alprech offer coastal scenery and landscapes; Fort de l’Heurt, the Batterie d’Alprech and the Argos Maritime Museum offer history and maritime culture. If you plan to take a Flobart trip, bear in mind that it runs in summer and check the relevant departure details.
