Hesdin offers a range of ways to explore, from its town hall, belfry and Notre-Dame Church to the literary world of Abbé Prévost, marked forest trails and a weekly market. This mix helps you choose the focus of your trip: architectural history, literature, nature or a visit timed to coincide with market day.

Town Hall, Belfry and Architectural History

Hesdin’s town hall dates from the second half of the 16th century. Construction of the town hall and belfry complex began in 1563; the belfry’s shell was completed around 1581. The municipal belfry is 70 metres tall. The dates refer to different construction phases: 1563 marks the start of work on the complex, around 1581 the approximate completion of the belfry’s shell, while the date given for the town hall covers a broader period.

The town hall’s bretèche was listed as a historic monument by decree on 10 June 1926. Notre-Dame Church was built between 1565 and 1585. It is a Flemish hall church without a transept; this detail identifies a specific feature of its floor plan as well as its architectural form. In the late 19th century, Clovis Normand, an architect from Hesdin, restored the church. The Théâtre Clovis-Normand is a theatre in the Italian style. Another historic structure is the riding hall, built in 1821 on the Bastion du Marquis.

Literature and Local History

The Maison natale de l’Abbé Prévost is a 17th-century historic monument. It offers a guided exploration of its rooms, anecdotes and the writer’s literary world. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to confirm them in advance. A ceramics workshop opened in the house in October 2022. Check separately whether visitors can take part.

The Hesdin Museum displays objects from excavations in Hesdin and Vieil-Hesdin, including tools and ceramics. These archaeological finds offer a different perspective on local history alongside the literary perspective of the Prévost house.

Forest Trails and Weekly Market

Hesdin has more than 40 kilometres of marked forest trails. Conditions on individual trails may change; check them before setting out. The nearly three-century-old Chêne de la Vierge stands near Carrefour du Commandeur in the Forêt domaniale d’Hesdin.

Hesdin’s weekly market takes place every Thursday, including public holidays. It offers fruit, vegetables, meat and fish; the selection may vary from one market day to another. Thursday gives the market a fixed place in the weekly schedule, while the specific selection of products may vary.

Hesdin can be explored through a range of interests: its historic buildings, the Prévost house and forest trails each offer a different focus, while the market adds a specific date to plan around.
