Church architecture, mill history and farm products offer different ways to explore Fléchin. The churches draw attention to their floor plans and surviving architectural features; the Moulin de la Carnoye adds the perspective of historic milling technology. A farm shop offers a different focus on regional produce. This lets you plan around architecture, historic use or a potential purchase.

Churches with Distinctive Architectural Features

The former parish church of Saint-Martin has been protected as a Monument historique since 1926. The foundations and the first storey of the original tower, with its Romanesque twin windows, have been preserved. The term refers to two window openings arranged together and helps to identify the tower’s architectural feature more precisely. The protected status and surviving architectural features offer different points of reference: the historical context and a specific architectural detail.

The present-day Église Saint-Pierre de Boncourt appears to date from the late 18th century. From inside the church, it is clear that the nave and choir are not aligned. In church architecture, “nave” refers to the main longitudinal space, while the choir is the adjoining area; their offset axes therefore describe a distinctive feature of the spatial layout. The church also stands in the centre of the village and is surrounded by its cemetery. This location anchors it in the village landscape, while the offset between the nave and choir draws attention to the interior.

The Église Saint-Jacques de Cuhem is a chapel of the parish of Fléchin. Its single-nave layout has a choir with a three-sided end. “Single-nave” describes a nave without multiple side aisles; the three-sided shape describes the end of the choir. One building campaign for the church is dated to 1876. The floor plan and building history thus offer two different ways to understand it: the spatial layout can be described from the structure, while the year places a building campaign in time.

Moulin de la Carnoye: Technology and Water Power

The Moulin de la Carnoye can be dated in part to the 18th century. The mill frame with its lantern gear, as well as the millstone, have been preserved. These components make the mill’s former technical use tangible: it harnessed water power generated locally. Several streams and small springs run through the commune of Fléchin and explain the presence of watermills. The streams and springs describe the context at commune level; the use of water power is part of the history of the Moulin de la Carnoye. In this way, the landscape and surviving mill technology complement each other without offering the same perspective on the place.

Farm Shop and Regional Products

The Ferme du Moulin de la Carnoye sells beef directly in portioned packages, by order. It also offers vegetables, seasonal fruit, eggs, butter and honey. For planning purposes, it is helpful to note the difference between the types of offer: beef is sold to order, while the fruit is seasonal. Check product availability before your trip. If you would like to include local produce in your trip, you can consider the farm shop as a separate focus alongside the churches and mill.
