In Desvres, the history of ceramics can be traced to a specific date: in 1764, Jean-François STA founded the town’s first faience factory. The Musée de la Céramique continues that story, while Mont Pelé and Mont Hulin offer a different perspective on history and landscape.
Ceramic history and two distinct museums
The Musée de la Céramique displays around 700 pieces of pottery, faience, stoneware and porcelain. These material categories show the breadth of the ceramic collection. A chronological and thematic tour through ten rooms covers Desvres’ ceramic history from the late 17th to the early 21st century. The collection and the tour highlight different aspects: the variety of materials in one, and their development over several centuries in the other. The founding in 1764 falls within the period covered by the tour.
The museum offers guided tours, educational activities and modelling workshops throughout the year. Visitors can explore ceramics not only by viewing the exhibits, but also through educational activities and hands-on modelling.
The Musée de la Belle Époque is housed in the former Fourmaintraux factory and displays around 4,000 pieces from M. Debette’s personal collection. It adds another collection and a different setting from the town’s history to the story of Desvres. Considering the two museums side by side, one presents the history and variety of ceramic materials, while the other showcases a personal collection.
Mont Hulin and Mont Pelé: history and landscape
Mont Hulin was the site of a strategic fortress in the Middle Ages. Mont Pelé tells a different story of change: the former chalk quarry has been remarkably recolonised by vegetation and offers a panoramic view over Desvres and its surroundings. The two sites therefore represent different themes: a historic fortress site on the one hand, and a landscape shaped by its former use as a chalk quarry on the other.
A circular trail over Mont Pelé and Mont Hulin starts at the Musée de la Céramique on Rue Jean Macé.
Water and wellness facilities in Desvres
The Centre Aquatique Naturéo has a 25-metre sports pool, a leisure and learning pool, a water slide, and a paddling pool with play features and a waterfall. The wellness area includes a 130-square-metre balneotherapy pool, a hammam, two saunas and a Scandinavian shower.
Naturéo is clearly different from the museums: here, pools and wellness take centre stage; there, ceramics, history and collections. If you plan to visit Naturéo, it is a good idea to check the current access rules and the availability of wellness facilities in advance.
