Lille offers several specific reasons for a city break: the Town Hall Belfry with its panoramic views, historic museums, Parc de la Citadelle, and markets with cultural and culinary connections. The sights and events offer different starting points for planning your trip.

The Belfry and the city's history

Lille has a history spanning more than ten centuries and has been part of the national network “Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire” since 2004. One of its most distinctive landmarks is the Town Hall Belfry: it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005 and offers panoramic views of Lille. The belfry is 104 metres tall; this figure refers to the structure, not the height of the viewing point.

After an initial flight of stairs, visitors can take the elevator to the viewing point or continue on foot. Check access details before your visit. The Town Hall and belfry are accessible via Mairie de Lille station on Metro Line 2; check the route before travelling as well.

The citadel, park and zoo

Construction of the Citadel of Lille began in 1667 and took three years. Parc de la Citadelle is a significant historic, natural and sporting part of the city. Exhibitions line the walk through the citadel and its park; the exhibition programme may change. This way, the history of the fortifications and a walk featuring changing exhibitions come together.

At the foot of the walls of the Vauban Citadel lies Lille Zoo. Across three hectares, it showcases 77 animal species in six themed areas. The number of species and the layout may change during renovations. The citadel, park and zoo therefore offer different perspectives on the same part of the Lille experience: a historic site, landscaped open space and animal habitats.

Museums and guided tours

The Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse is housed in a hospital founded by Jeanne de Flandre in 1237. Since 1962, the museum has been home to an extensive collection of paintings, tapestries, wood carvings, furniture and regional faience. The collection brings together a variety of artworks and everyday objects, offering a different way to explore history than a visit to the fortifications or the belfry.

The Palais des Beaux-Arts displays French and European paintings and sculptures. Its collection also includes relief maps of regional cities fortified by Vauban in the 17th century. Those looking to explore Lille through its museums will find two distinct areas of focus: the varied collection at the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse, and the paintings, sculptures and historic relief maps at the Palais des Beaux-Arts.

The “Lille, City of Art and History” service offers events for tourists throughout the year, as well as guided tours of Lille’s heritage, including in Vieux-Lille. Individual tour dates may vary. Vieux-Lille also has a seven-kilometre walking route featuring seven sights and nine possible activities. Check the specific dates of guided tours separately from the walking route.

Markets and dates to plan your trip

The Braderie de Lille takes place almost every year on the first weekend of September. During the two-day event, the streets become a huge open-air market for browsing and bargaining. If you want to plan your trip around the Braderie, check the specific event dates before booking: the recurring time frame does not guarantee that the event will take place every year.

The Marché de Wazemmes offers a different culinary perspective: this market celebrates local and international cuisine. It complements the historic sights with a market as a travel attraction in its own right. The Braderie and Wazemmes focus on markets and food, while guided tours and museums put heritage and collections centre stage.

Plan your stay and hotel search

Your preferred sights and travel dates can help you choose a hotel in Lille. If you are interested in the city’s history, you can plan your stay around the belfry, museums and guided heritage tours. If the Braderie is your main interest, first check whether your trip coincides with a confirmed event date. This way, your plans are based on what you want to do and the specific dates, rather than treating different offerings as one fixed itinerary.
