Two walking routes offer different ways to explore Coutiches: the Circuit des Chapelles de Coutiches focuses on chapels, while the self-guided heritage trail covers a specific distance of 10.5 kilometres. There is also an annual September pilgrimage, architectural and agricultural history, and a local body of water. This gives you the chance to choose your own focus for your trip, whether that is walking, heritage or landscape.

Chapel trail or heritage walk?

The Circuit des Chapelles de Coutiches starts at the Calvary at 58 Rue des Sablières. Because of its length, it is intended for experienced walkers. The heritage walk “Coutiches - 10.5 km” is different in both format and distance: you can do it independently, and the route is 10.5 kilometres long. The information answers different questions for your planning: the Circuit is described as a walk for experienced walkers, while the heritage walk gives a specific distance and the option to set off independently.

Pilgrimage tradition and architectural history

A date in the calendar is part of Coutiches’ pilgrimage tradition. Every third Sunday in September, the faithful continue to make a pilgrimage to Notre-Dame des Fièvres to pay homage to her. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the specific date for your travel year. So, unlike choosing between two walking routes, the date is the first consideration here.

The architectural history offers different perspectives, too. Château de Pintignies was originally a manor farm dependent on Flines Abbey. At the Chapelle de Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, by contrast, a specific building project takes centre stage: in 1850, Father Galtier de Calmayrac had a new chapel built. This places the building’s original function and its connection to the abbey alongside a dated construction project and the name of the priest who commissioned it.

Agricultural heritage and bodies of water

La Ferme au Carré features traditional farmsteads with square layouts, inspired by the medieval “Censes”. The layout is the specific architectural feature, while the Censes provide the historical connection. Visitors interested in rural architecture will find a different way to explore the heritage here than through the history of the château or the chapel’s construction.

At Étang de la Defière, an association looks after the pond to support the development of trout, whitefish, carp and ducks. Anglers benefit from this, too. If you plan to fish, check the fishing opportunities locally.

The landscape also includes the Guérondelle, a small tributary of the Courant de Coutiches. The Courant de Coutiches does not extend beyond the boundaries of Coutiches. Together with the pond, this water feature offers another local point of interest alongside walking and architectural history.

When choosing your activities, you can weigh up different criteria: whether a walk is intended for experienced walkers, the stated length of a self-guided route, or the fixed date of the pilgrimage. Architectural and agricultural history, as well as water management, add themes that you can explore independently of a walk.
