The Battle of Bouvines and the paths through the village and countryside give the town two distinct points of interest. At the Église Saint-Pierre, large stained-glass windows bring the memory of the 1214 event to life; the paths, by contrast, vary in length and character. This makes it easy to choose what suits your interest in history, village walks or longer strolls.

The battle at the Église Saint-Pierre

The battle took place on Sunday, 27 July 1214. Philippe Auguste, King of France, and Ferrand, Count and Governor of Flanders, faced each other. The Église Saint-Pierre was rebuilt from 1880 to 1886 as a memorial to the battle. Its 21 large stained-glass windows depict the event; each measures 8 m × 3 m. The windows were installed from 1889 to 1906 and were classified as historic monuments in 1981. Les Amis de Bouvines organise guided tours of the church and its windows—an opportunity to discover how the battle is portrayed in the context of the building.

Historical traces in the village

Other places also point to different eras and traditions. The statue of Jeanne d’Arc was erected on land belonging to the Dehau family between her beatification in 1909 and her canonisation in 1920. The Chapelle St Léonard was built by François Duponchelle in the mid-19th century. It once marked the footpath used by workers from Templeuve or Orchies on their way to Lille, Roubaix or Tourcoing. The path known as the carrière du Curé is a section of the ancient Roman road from Seclin to Tournai, which crossed the Marque at this point. During the Battle of Bouvines on 27 July 1214, Philippe Auguste’s army travelled along this path.

An annual pilgrimage took place at the Fontaine St Pierre on 29 June. Its tradition dated back to the 13th century and continued until 1974. Another historic procession went to the Chapelle St Léonard on the Tuesdays of Rogationtide, when residents prayed for good harvests. This tradition lasted 130 years. Both customs are now part of the past; they give these places a significance distinct from that of the walking routes described today.

Walks with different points of interest

The Balade culturelle is an accessible circular route through the historic village centre, linking its religious, architectural and rural heritage. It is 1.8 km long, or 2.7 km with the alternative route. Considerably longer, the 8 km Boucle de la Marque follows the river through woods and meadows. The two routes therefore offer different scales: a circuit through the village centre or a longer walk along the Marque.

Another option is the Randonnée-photos découverte, an approximately 7 km photo treasure hunt around Bouvines towards the Marais de Bonnance. Its specific format may be subject to local changes. Les Amis de Bouvines also organise guided walks through the village and its surroundings, including the former battlefield. You can choose according to route length and your interests: village history, riverside scenery or a guided look at the former battlefield.

Monastère and Petit Château

The Monastère de Bouvines welcomes diocesan visitors. The Chemin Neuf community organises Christian formation seminars there. If a visit or seminar is important to your plans, check the current visitor arrangements and dates in advance. The Boutique du Monastère sells products from abbeys belonging to the Chemin Neuf community, including honey, wine, beer and the monastery’s apple juice; the range and availability may change.

The Petit Château also adds to the town’s historical character. The current building was constructed in 1696 and later altered. The first building is said to date back to the 11th century. Together with the church, chapel and paths, the château offers another perspective on Bouvines—one that complements its battle history and walks through the village and countryside.
