Boeschepe combines expansive views over the Flemish plain with a striking windmill, the Église Saint-Martin and the tradition of giant figures. The “Balade nature et patrimoine Boeschepe” nature and heritage trail leads from the village centre to Mont de Boeschepe and the Ondankmeulen. Alongside individual cultural and landscape highlights, there is also a named route that brings several of them together.

Landscape and Circular Trail

Boeschepe lies at the first foothills of the Monts de Flandre and offers panoramic views over the Flemish plain. The Mont de Boeschèpe also affords expansive views. The landscape is therefore a focus in its own right, alongside local history and buildings: the view extends beyond the village across the plain.

The nature and heritage trail leads from the village centre to Mont de Boeschepe and the Ondankmeulen. It is about 5.5 kilometres long. This distance gives the route a specific length to help with planning. Its course brings together two different interests: the Mont as a destination in the landscape and the mill as a historic building.

The Ondankmeulen and Its History

The Ondankmeulen, also called the Moulin de l’Ingratitude, stands immediately west of the village centre. It is a wooden post mill used for grinding grain. Its design and function make it easy to recognise as a mill, rather than merely a historic local name.

The present building was constructed in 1802. It was listed as a historic monument in 1977. The two dates mark different milestones: 1802 is when the present building was constructed, while 1977 is when it was later listed as a monument. Those interested in architecture can thus discover both a specific design and its place in time.

Church and Local Traditions

The Église Saint-Martin in Boeschepe was the setting for the first Protestant sermon in 1562. One of the church bells also bears a frieze depicting the Dance of Death. These are two distinct historical references: a religious event and an image on a specific object. The church’s history can therefore be explored through both the event and the depiction.

The tradition of giant figures is also part of the village’s local character. Boeschepe keeps it alive with Jérôme le Meunier and Djoos de Bolder. Hops are still grown in the village, too. Each offers a different perspective: the giant figures represent a named tradition, while hop growing is an ongoing agricultural practice.

A Playful Contrast

For a different kind of experience, visit the “Le labyrinthe 3D” leisure attraction on Chemin des Loups in Boeschepe. The willow land-art labyrinth invites visitors to hide and play. Its playful use is quite different from the historic themes surrounding the mill and church, adding another activity to the range of things to discover.
