Anstaing lies on the chalky plain of Mélantois, on the edge of Pévèle. Local highlights range from the architectural history of Saint-Laurent Church and a local devotional tradition to the nature area, with its pond and educational trail. If you choose a destination based on its specific attractions, you can take local history, a walk and nature into account here.
Architectural History and Religious Heritage
The present-day church in Anstaing dates from 1732. Its side aisles, built of red bricks, were added in 1871. Its architectural history can therefore be understood as two steps far apart in time: the 18th-century church and a later 19th-century extension. For those interested in architecture, the comparison is especially tangible because both the dates and the material of the side aisles are specified. The red bricks mark the later addition to the same building.
The religious heritage also includes the Lemaistre family’s tomb slab in Église Saint-Laurent in Anstaing. It is made of white marble and set in a carved, gilded wooden frame. Unlike the architectural history, which can be understood through two dates, this is a single memorial with precisely identifiable materials at its center. The marble and gilded wood provide a distinctive accent alongside the architecture.
The Saint-Laurent Fountain
The Saint-Laurent Fountain is behind the church. In the local devotional tradition, it is considered to have healing properties for burns and skin diseases; this is a traditional religious attribution, not a medical claim. A municipal notice dated July 1, 2025, describes the water as untreated groundwater and says it is not for drinking. As later local notices may supersede this information, check before visiting whether a newer notice has been issued.
Natural Area and Educational Trail
Anstaing’s nature area was inaugurated in 2024. It includes a pond and planted trees; biodiversity has also been restored there. The pond and trees are designed features, while the restored biodiversity represents the ecological aspect of the site. The educational trail adds an educational dimension and was created together with schoolchildren and Chico Mendes. Nature enthusiasts can thus distinguish three specific aspects of the site: its design, ecological enhancement and educational offering.
Walking and Practical Planning
The circular walking route “À la découverte d’Anstaing” (Discover Anstaing) begins in the historic town center. This gives the walk a specific starting point; its connection to the town distinguishes it from the natural area, whose educational trail is part of the nature area. When planning your time, you can weigh up a circular route starting in the center and a nature experience with an educational trail as different options. A transport service by reservation is also available in Anstaing. Before planning, check whether it is currently available and what booking rules apply.
