Puylaroque, also known by its Occitan name Pella Roca, is a bastide situated at an altitude of 280 metres on a limestone spur. From here, panoramic views stretch across the valleys and hilltop lakes of the Quercy Caussadais. Its architecture and fortifications give the town a distinct cultural and historical focus; hiking trails offer other ways to explore the surroundings. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth considering the different time commitments: from a 90-minute heritage tour to a hiking route of approximately seven hours.

Medieval Architecture in the Town

The heritage tour of Puylaroque, offered by the Pays d’art et d’histoire, lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. It focuses on the town’s medieval architecture and fortifications. A notable stop is the Citadelle, built around 1595. Its basket-handle arch portal is characteristic of the 16th and 17th centuries and reflects the architectural styles of that period.

The Église Saint-Jacques is located in the centre of Puylaroque and is listed in France’s register of historic monuments. The older part of the church houses a reliquary of the Holy Veil of the Virgin dating from the 14th century. Its upper part is made of silver, mother-of-pearl and wood. Access to the interior of the church may vary.

The construction history of the Église Saint-Jacques can also be traced through several periods: one section of the choir bay dates from the 12th century. The vault was rebuilt in the 14th century, when the nave and chapels were also added. The tower and west façade appear to date from the 18th century.

Another church named Saint-Symphorien has been listed as a historic monument since 1948. Its choir is in Caylus, while its nave is in Puylaroque. This split location is one of the distinctive details of the town’s heritage history.

Hikes for Different Time Budgets

The “Habitats et sentiers quercynols” PR2 hiking route starts in Puylaroque. It is 25 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes. This makes it a considerably longer undertaking than the heritage tour and requires a larger block of time.

Four other hiking trails start at the site of the Chapelle Saint-Symphorien, in a Natura 2000 area. They range from 4 to 12 kilometres in length. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. You can compare the hiking options based on their stated distances, while the actual time needed will depend on the individual route.

Bees and Honey Production

On the slopes of Puylaroque, “Bee au Top” offers a visit to the apiary, with insights into the lives of bees and honey production. The farm’s products include honey, nougat, gingerbread, fresh pollen, propolis and French royal jelly. The visit adds a specific focus on beekeeping and its products to the town’s architecture and hiking attractions. As visitor arrangements may change, check the conditions for visiting in advance.

When choosing a hotel in Puylaroque, you can plan your stay around these interests and time budgets: the tour focuses on architecture and fortifications, the PR2 is a longer hike, and four trails of varying lengths start at the chapel site. This makes it possible to decide before booking what you would like to focus on during your stay.
