Discover Orgueil through an extraordinary meteorite fall, the Church of Saint Ferréol and routes for walking or cycling. The meteorite anchors the village’s history in a specific event; the Vélo-voie verte du Tarn runs through Orgueil and offers a different way to explore. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose to focus on cultural history, outdoor activities or local cuisine.

The Orgueil meteorite

On 14 May 1864, the meteorite fell in a field in the commune of Orgueil. The event is also noteworthy for its scientific classification: the meteorite is a very rare carbonaceous chondrite. It weighed more than 14 kilograms and is the most massive of the nine known CI chondrites.

These features tell a story that goes beyond a single fall. They connect the village’s name with a rare class of meteorites and a specific size. A local memorial adds another perspective on the event: a stele commemorating the meteorite fall was erected in Orgueil on 24 May 1964. The event of 1864 and its later commemoration thus stand side by side as two points in time.

You can also find a connection to the meteorite beyond Orgueil. A fragment of the Orgueil meteorite, which fell near Montauban in 1864, is on display at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Montauban. Exhibition information may change, so check before travelling to see whether the fragment is currently on display.

Church of Saint Ferréol: architecture and art

The Church of Saint Ferréol was built in 1876 in the Neo-Gothic style, to plans by the Toulouse architect Germain Dutour. Its architectural style and date of construction give a visit its own cultural and historical focus, distinct from the history of the meteorite.

The church also houses a copy of Titian’s painting “Christ Crowned with Thorns.” Saint Ferréol thus brings architectural history together with a specific work of art. The church can be visited in Orgueil; as access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the conditions before your visit.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The Vélo-voie verte du Tarn runs through Orgueil. Its route is flat, protected and shaded, and can be used on foot or by bike. It offers a way to include a walk or bike ride in your plans, without limiting your stay to historical sights alone.

There are also two cycling loops called “Du Tarn et ses coteaux.” They can start at the Salle des fêtes in Orgueil. The routes therefore differ in how they relate to the village: the Vélo-voie verte runs through Orgueil, while the Salle des fêtes is named as a possible starting point for the loops. Routes may change, so check the latest route details before setting off.

Local cuisine and geographical setting

Exploring local cuisine can go hand in hand with walking or cycling in Orgueil. This adds a culinary focus to your outings without making the day revolve around a single sight. Cuisine can also be part of discovering the village on a trip focused on cultural history and outdoor activities.

One geographical feature concerns the terrace in the commune of Orgueil: it lies within the Vins de Fronton appellation area. This places the terrace within the region covered by the appellation. Together with the meteorite fall, the church and the routes, it offers a range of themes to shape your time in Orgueil around.
