Monteils offers two distinct highlights for a stay: Parc de la Lère, with its lakes, natural surroundings and leisure activities, and the history of the village. Plan your trip around whether you are mainly looking for time outdoors, water sports or a connection with the area’s history.
Lakes and wildlife at Parc de la Lère
Parc de la Lère lies entirely within the municipality of Monteils and covers around 55 hectares. Near Caussade-Monteils, lakes define this green space. It is located in a protected area dedicated to preserving and enhancing wild animals and plants. The park is home to a large colony of around a hundred geese; their numbers may vary depending on the season. If you are particularly interested in birdlife, bear this seasonal variation in mind.
Leisure, fishing and water sports
Parc de la Lère has children’s playgrounds, a sports and orienteering course, a skatepark, and picnic and barbecue areas. You can explore the park on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Water activities include wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and towable tubes. Fishing options include a family fishing area, a no-kill black bass course, two float-tube courses and a trout pond. You can choose what to focus on: exercise on land, time at the picnic and barbecue areas, or activities on and in the water.
Evasion Cable Park in Monteils offers a closer look at wakeboarding: its two-pulley cable system runs along a 400 m course across the lake at around 30 km/h. The offer includes an introduction to wakeboarding, features for all experience levels and stand-up paddleboarding. If you want to make wakeboarding a specific part of your trip, you will find both an introduction and options for different experience levels; stand-up paddleboarding is another possibility. Evasion Cable Park is accessible via the A20 from Cahors and Montauban.
Village history and orientation
Château de Monteils was built by the Lacombe family in the early 18th century. In 2023, only the ground-floor level and a few sections of wall overgrown with vegetation remained. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church was rebuilt after the Wars of Religion in the early 17th century. In the village, an avenue of plane trees connects the church, the cemetery and the former château via the former rectory. This sequence provides a specific setting for the village’s historic buildings.
The Parc-de-la-Lère circular route also offers a glimpse of Monteils’ history: after 350 m, the château ruins and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church can be seen on the right. Check local conditions and access before setting out. The digital Baludik route “L'étrange puits de Monteils” offers another way to discover the village through play. The circular route and the digital trail have different focuses: one leads to a described viewpoint, while the other turns exploring the village into a digital game.
