The Tours de Saint-Laurent rise above the Bave Valley and Saint-Céré. Protected as a historic monument, the fortified complex consists of a residential building and two feudal towers dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The ensemble thus brings together different architectural elements and periods. For travellers interested in architecture, it is a distinct historical highlight of the town.

Streets, squares and church architecture

Saint-Céré’s historic centre includes medieval streets and half-timbered houses. At Place du Mercadial, arcades, carved façades and other half-timbered houses preserve historic details. The Maison des Consuls, a 15th-century building, is also located there. Those wishing to compare architectural styles will find these more intimate features of the townscape alongside the fortified complex in Saint-Céré.

The Église Sainte-Spérie combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. It was built above a crypt with a holy spring. This brings together different aspects of the town’s architectural history: the fortifications, façades and streets, and the combination of different styles in the church.

Art and performing arts by season

The Maison des Consuls hosts year-round exhibitions by established and lesser-known artists; the exhibition programme changes over time. From October to May, the Théâtre de l’Usine offers an accessible, multidisciplinary programme that is open to all. The programme and dates change seasonally. The Festival d’opéra de Saint-Céré takes place between late July and early August; its dates and programme also vary. The difference matters when planning a trip: the Maison des Consuls’ exhibitions run throughout the year, while theatre and opera are tied to different time periods. Check the specific event dates if you would like to plan your visit around them.

Cycling and planning your visit

For cyclists, the third VTT stage of the Tour du Lot runs from Saint-Céré to Figeac and is 73 kilometres long. Stage routes may be revised, so check the current route before setting off. At 73 kilometres, the stage requires its own planning and is not simply a short addition to a visit to the town. The Saint-Céré tourist office carries the Accueil Vélo label and offers luggage storage. If you plan to use this service, check its current status, as visitor services and labels can change.

Art and culinary offerings

The Atelier-Exposition Louis2verdal in Saint-Céré presents wood and metal sculptures, machine sculptures, paintings and drawings. Its range thus extends from sculpture to painting and drawing. As access to the exhibition may change, check before finalising your visit plans. Conserves Cassan offers tastings of fresh produce and cooking advice. Opening arrangements may also change here; if you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check in advance.
