Montcuq combines a distinctive hilltop village with a keep, church art, hiking and mountain biking trails, and a Plan d’eau. This makes it easy to shape your stay around different interests: for cultural discoveries, choose the Tour de Montcuq, the Église Saint-Hilaire and exhibitions; if you would like to spend time outdoors, you can plan hiking or cycling routes and seasonal activities by the water. The range extends from local history to activities by the lake.

Hilltop village and keep

Montcuq was built on a conical hill. The houses extend down the southern slope to the foot of the tower—a striking relationship between the village’s appearance and its elevated position. The keep has been classified as a Monument historique since 1904. At the Tour de Montcuq, visitors can explore four rooms, vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and latrines. From the upper part of the keep, the view stretches across the village, valleys and surrounding plateaus. Those interested in historic rooms and views will find a different focus here than on the circular trails or at the Plan d’eau. Visiting opportunities may vary by season; check in advance if the keep is a fixed part of your itinerary.

Church and exhibitions

The Église Saint-Hilaire dates from the late 13th or early 14th century. Its richly coloured stained-glass windows depict scenes from the life of Christ and Saint Hilary. While the keep, with its rooms and views of the surrounding area, offers an experience of space, the windows draw the eye to religious imagery. The two attractions provide different highlights within Montcuq’s cultural offering.

Three exhibitions can be seen in the Tour de Montcuq: a permanent exhibition about the medieval village, an exhibition on the heritage of the Lot department, and one about Nino Ferrer. The subjects range from the history of the village and the department’s heritage to a figure represented in Montcuq by a dedicated exhibition. Exhibition content may change; if a particular subject is important to your plans, check the current selection.

Circular trails on foot and by mountain bike

The Circuit du Chemin de Rouillac is an easy, eight-kilometre circular walking route starting in Montcuq-en-Quercy-Blanc. Part of the trail follows the GR65. On the return, there is a lovely view of Montcuq village. The combination of a circular route, distance and views makes it a clearly defined option for anyone wishing to explore Montcuq on foot.

A longer option with a different focus is the Circuit du « Petit Rapporteur »: a moderately difficult, 18-kilometre mountain biking loop starting in Montcuq-en-Quercy-Blanc. It includes a climb with a ten-percent gradient on the GR65, leading up to the plateau. If needed, the route can easily be divided into two sections. The two circular trails therefore differ in specific ways in terms of activity, distance and stated difficulty: eight kilometres on foot compared with 18 kilometres by mountain bike. Check the route details again before setting out.

Plan d’eau and Sunday market

At the Plan d’eau de Montcuq, there is an aqua zone as well as stand-up paddleboard and pedal boat rentals. Activities and rentals are seasonal and may vary. The Plan d’eau holds the Pavillon Bleu award; swimming is supervised there in July and August. For the current season, it is advisable to check the award’s status and whether swimming is supervised. This lets you treat water activities and swimming as separate highlights in your travel plans, rather than equating them with the cultural attractions or circular trails.

Montcuq market takes place every Sunday morning. Around 50 exhibitors take part, though the number may change. If visiting the market is an important part of your stay, check the dates for your travel period. The event Les 2 Jours de Montcuq also has a historical connection: Pierre Passemard founded it in 1977. The best-known version consists of two stages of 100 kilometres each. If you are planning a trip around the event, check the current dates.
