Montbrun lies on the right bank of the Lot and is crossed by the D662 departmental road. The village sits on a rocky promontory above the river; its surroundings are predominantly shaped by the Causse landscape. The river, cliffs and stone-built history give the village its distinctive character.

The Lot, the Causse and the cliffs

Montbrun faces the cliffs of Saut de la Mounine. The village and its surroundings are designated a protected site. At Rocher de Bédal, a viewpoint on the cliffs overlooks the meanders of the Lot. Birdlife is also part of the local natural landscape: the cliffs are home to species including the Subalpine Warbler, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Crag Martin, Wallcreeper, Common Raven and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

Dolmen and architectural history

The Dolmen des Aguals, also known as Combe de l’Ours, is characteristic of the megalithic architecture of the Causses du Quercy. It lies within the commune of Montbrun and is protected as a historic monument. Local sights also include gariottes: stone shepherds’ huts built from flat-laid stones, some of which are very well preserved.

Montbrun’s heritage includes the Church of Saint-Blaise. It was scheduled to open during the summer months of 2024; if you would like to see the church interior today, check the current opening hours before your visit. A fortress in Montbrun is documented in a charter dating from 1223. The castle ruins include the remains of a keep, which may date from the 13th century. One tower is attributed to a building phase after the Hundred Years’ War, dated to the late 15th or early 16th century.

Routes for different abilities

The Voie verte en liberté route starts in Montbrun and follows the former railway line. It is accessible to people using manual or electric wheelchairs, as well as to pushchairs. The former railway line from Cahors to Capdenac ran as far as the Montbrun stop at the entrance to the village. The route and the railway link therefore belong to different chapters of the village’s history: one starts in Montbrun today, while the other was a former railway line.

The Circuit de Gréalou is a challenging mountain biking route that alternates between the Lot Valley and the Causse. Between Montbrun and Cadrieu, it offers views of the Lot Valley. When planning an outing, the distinction between the accessible Voie verte and this challenging mountain biking route is a practical starting point.

At the 9th edition of the Trail des 3 Combes on 22 March 2026, a walk led through the centre of Montbrun to Mas de Doucet. There were 9 km and 14 km options. On the return route via Combe-Noire, the trail offered views of the Lot Valley. The event took place on the Causse of Montbrun; the two distances show the range of lengths offered for this particular walk.

Food and accommodation

At the 2024 FĂŞte votive, a truffade meal was served again, prepared by members of the festival committee. This dated event offers a glimpse of village life; it is not information about a future event date. Camping on the banks of the Lot is listed as an accommodation option in Montbrun; check availability before booking.
