Concots is part of the Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy and offers a clear contrast between the history of its castrum and a very hilly landscape. The feudal tower in the center of the castrum dates back to the 13th century; depressions known locally as cloups characterize the area. Other features include the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, with its painted ceiling and stained-glass windows bearing the artist’s signature, and the Lébratières windmill. Local history, art and landscape thus offer distinct ways to experience Concots.

Landscape and Karst Features

The area around Concots is very hilly. Its depressions are known locally as cloups. Another landscape feature is the Combe Noire, a dry valley that slopes down from the spring known locally as “Lac.” This spring is a karst spring at the bottom of the bowl-shaped Canabal. The names distinguish between the depressions, the dry valley, the spring and the bowl-shaped area in which it lies.

Castrum, Church and Trading History

The present-day village of Concots was once a fortified castle. The feudal tower stands at the center of the castrum; it was built by the lords of Cardaillac in the 13th century. The old residential building adjoined the tower and was rebuilt in the 15th century, after the Hundred Years’ War. Concots was also an important trading hub until the First World War.

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was completed in 1879; its stained-glass windows are dated 1870 and bear the signature GP. Dagrand. It also has a particularly original Stations of the Cross and a painted ceiling. Of Concots’ three windmills, the one at Lébratières is the best preserved. The village’s history spans the feudal tower of the 13th century, the rebuilding of the residential building in the 15th century and the completion of the church in 1879. Its importance as a trading hub continued until the First World War.

Walking and Mountain Biking

Chemin Faisant is a walking trail of about 12 kilometers between Concots and Escamps. The route features works by local artists, including paintings and sculptures; the works on display may change. Check the route details locally before setting out. The walking trails vary in layout: Chemin Faisant connects two villages, while the GR 36 and GR 46 share a section through Concots. A route description from August 2026 presents Entre pierres et eau as an easy 22-kilometer mountain bike loop through the Causse de Limogne. At 22 kilometers, the described loop is longer than Chemin Faisant, at about 12 kilometers; they are also different activities, walking and mountain biking. Check the details for Entre pierres et eau again before setting out.
