Villelongue offers two distinct highlights for a stay: historic buildings and a circular hike to the ruins of the Prieuré de Saint-Orens. The Saint Martin Church and the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine d'Ortiac each have their own place in architectural history; the hike combines a specific destination with details on distance, duration, and difficulty.

Church and Chapel: Different Periods of Construction

Saint Martin is a 13th-century Romanesque church. Its main altar has a tabernacle with caryatids dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. This brings medieval architecture together with a much later furnishing in a single building. Caryatids are sculpted figures used as supports; here, they form part of the tabernacle and are a distinctive detail in the altar area. The church also houses reliquary busts of Saint-Orens and Sainte Patience, his mother. Both come from the Prieuré de Saint-Orens. The busts thus also create a thematic link to the priory above Villelongue.

The Chapelle Sainte-Catherine d'Ortiac was built at the end of the 17th century. Its distinctive features include a remarkable limewood roof structure. Inside is an original, gilded wooden altarpiece with a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. An altarpiece is the decorative structure behind an altar; here, wood and gilding describe specific features of the furnishing. Compared with Saint Martin, the chapel represents a later period, having been built at the end of the 17th century, while the church itself dates from the 13th century.

The Priory and the Hike

The ruins of the Prieuré de Saint-Orens en Lavedan are among the oldest monasteries in the département. They stand at an altitude of 900 metres, on a rocky terrace on Mont Arribaout above Villelongue. This setting, with its elevation and terrain, is part of the character of this historic destination. Villelongue itself lies on the edge of the Parc National des Pyrénées.

The moderately challenging circular hike to the Prieuré de Saint-Orens is 6 kilometres long and takes 3 hours. It starts and ends at Place Sallabert in Villelongue, making it a clearly defined activity to plan into your itinerary. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Another hiking option is the Route D'Ortiac Ă  Isaby, which can also be started in the village of Villelongue. Starting here adds about 1 hour and 15 minutes of walking time and 200 metres of elevation gain. These approximate additional figures apply to this route variant. The 3-hour estimate, by contrast, refers to the circular hike to the priory.

The vegetation is another point of interest along the route to the Prieuré: tree heath is widespread in dry heathland with a warm microclimate. This gives the hike a specific connection to nature as well as its historic destination. Those interested in both can include the priory ruins and the plant life described here in their travel plans from different perspectives.
