In Sers, Romanesque architecture and hikes with different time requirements come together as themes for trip planning. The Église Saint-Vincent, the Saint-Justin oratory and several routes offer practical starting points for exploring cultural and mountain themes.

Church and the history of Saint-Justin

The Romanesque Église Saint-Vincent dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Vincent. Its distinctive architectural features include a half-dome apse and a gabled bell tower with battlements, to which a watchtower was added. The church is open daily; check the current opening hours before your visit.

La Croix de Saint-Justin is an oratory dedicated to Justin, the first evangelist of Bigorre. It stands on the site of a former priory and chapel that fell into ruin in the 12th century. The oratory and the Saint-Justin cross were reconstructed in 1990. At an altitude of 1,300 metres, they offer views of the villages of Barèges, Viella, Betpouey and Luz Saint Sauveur. La Croix is free to access and open to the public; you can visit at any time without a guide. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

Hiking routes by duration and difficulty

The “Le belvédère de la croix Saint-Justin” route passes through Barèges and Sers. This easy circular hike is listed as 4.9 kilometres long and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes; it is marked GR and PR. At the small Col de Saint-Justin, the route leads to an information board and the oratory. Hiking here in winter is not recommended because of avalanche paths.

“Les villages de Labatsus” is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 9 kilometres, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. It is also marked GR and PR. Along the way, the route crosses the Bastan via a footbridge and passes the Église de Sers on the way into the village centre. Its course thus combines a hiking route with a walk through the village.

The moderately difficult “Le lac Bleu” route is described as a 13.5-kilometre out-and-back hike. The stated duration is 5 hours and 30 minutes, with 754 metres of ascent and 754 metres of descent. It passes through Sers and Beaucens, crosses the Col d'Aoube and reaches a valley with Lac Vert and Lac Bleu. Hiking is not recommended in snow or poor visibility; access in the mountains may vary by season.

The three routes differ in walking time, format and difficulty: the easy, almost five-kilometre loop is followed by two moderately difficult hikes, including the longer out-and-back route to Lac Bleu. The stated durations range from 2 hours and 15 minutes to 5 hours and 30 minutes. This makes it possible to compare the routes by the time available and the format of each hike.

Exhibition at the Col du Tourmalet

At the Col du Tourmalet, at an altitude of 2,115 metres, the Maison du Tourmalet houses an exhibition space beneath a 360-degree dome. The “Le Col des Géants” exhibition tells the story of the pass and its use by the Tour de France. Also at the Maison, the animated film “NOX, LE VOYAGE DANS LA NUIT” raises awareness of light pollution.
