Maubourguet combines walks along two waterways that flow through the town with a landmark of cultural heritage: the Oceanus mosaic, the church of the former St Martin de Celle monastery, and a self-guided tour of the historic monuments. The traditional weekly market, held on Tuesday mornings, is another highlight. You can shape your stay around the things that interest you here: riverbanks, history, long-distance hiking trails or local produce.

Walks along the Adour and Echez

The Adour and Echez flow through Maubourguet, and their banks provide an ideal setting for walks. The Fontaine Nymphes de l’Adour offers a specific connection to the Adour: it stands on the riverbank on Boulevard Lapalu and features two bronze statues. This named artwork adds another dimension to the riverside theme. For your stay, you can consider both walks by the water and longer-distance hiking trails, though they offer different ways of getting around.

Mosaic, church and historic monuments

The Musée archéologique de Maubourguet displays a 20 m² mosaic of the god Oceanus as its outstanding exhibit, presented as it was discovered on site. The mosaic’s decoration combines Oceanus with groups of octopuses, ducks, dolphins and fish. The design is therefore not limited to its central figure: the groups of animals also shape its depiction. The mosaic is protected as a historic monument. It was listed by decree on 7 July 1980, and the listing was amended by decree on 15 September 2021.

Another trace of the past is the church, the only surviving building of the former St Martin de Celle monastery. The Circuit de visite Maubourguet is a self-guided tour of the town’s historic monuments. Its format lets you set your own pace. The museum, church and tour offer different ways to explore: a specific exhibit, a surviving monastery building and a series of historic sites around the town.

Long-distance trails and route distances

The GR®101 starts at the GR®653 near Maubourguet and links it to Lourdes. The route is described as covering 61 kilometres over three stages. It runs through the Adour Valley and across wooded slopes; along its north–south route, the Pyrenees range is visible. The number of stages, distance and scenery each offer a different point of reference when considering this long-distance trail.

A different distance applies to the GR®653: in the Hautes-Pyrénées département, it runs for 28 kilometres at the level of Maubourguet. The 61 kilometres of the GR®101, by contrast, refer to the link to Lourdes over three stages. The figures therefore relate to different sections of the routes. This distinction helps you orient yourself between a route with a named destination and stage plan, and the section of the GR®653 within the département.

Visit the market on Tuesday morning

Maubourguet’s traditional weekly market is held every Tuesday morning in the covered market and on Place de la Libération. Producers, merchants and craftspeople gather there, offering fresh produce and regional specialities. If you plan your visit around the market, check the date before travelling. The market takes place on a specific day of the week and at two named locations, making it a useful reference for anyone who wants to include local produce in their travel plans.
