Galan lies on a ridge between the valleys of the Baïsolle and the Baïse. Its rural surroundings alternate between cultivated terraces and wooded slopes. The trails also offer different experiences: La Serre passes through woodland and along a ridge path, Les Côteaux offers views of the Pyrenean range, and the Vélosud / V81 cycle route runs through Galan. Together with its bastide heritage, these themes offer different ways to shape a stay around the landscape, local history or outdoor activities.

Bastide heritage and historical layers

The Tour-Porte Sud is the last monumental remnant of Galan’s former city walls. The fortified stone tower has a footprint of 6.20 × 5.50 metres; its vaulted gateway is 2.40 metres wide and more than three metres high. The gateway is therefore taller than it is wide, offering a concise indication of the structure’s proportions. By decree dated 13 March 1946, the Tour-Porte Sud was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Its architectural form, dimensions and protected status give Galan’s bastide heritage a tangible historical connection.

The Halle-Mairie adds another historical role: from 1821 to 1958, a market was held under the hall on Thursdays. The hall was added to the inventory of historic monuments by decree dated 11 October 1984. Its market history and later protected status thus mark two distinct stages. The Église Saint-Julien also takes us back to an earlier building phase: it was built from 1540 to 1549 on the site of an older building. Its construction dates clearly predate the two decrees adding the monuments to the inventory, adding another historical layer to Galan.

Comparing hiking and cycling routes

The La Serre hiking trail starts and ends in Galan. It is 14 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The trail passes through woodland, follows a ridge path and crosses the Baïsole via a footbridge. Its length and estimated duration provide a clear timeframe; the woodland, ridge and river crossing describe the trail’s defining features.

Les Côteaux starts at the medieval bastide of Galan and offers views of the Pyrenean range. This route offers the option of walking two loops via the D23 between Sabarros and Recurt, each taking 2.5 hours. Compared with La Serre’s estimated 3 hours and 45 minutes, the two loops each have a stated duration of 2.5 hours—useful for choosing how much time to spend hiking. Another way to get active is the Vélosud / V81 cycle route, which passes through Galan, continues to Lannemezan and then heads towards Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.

A summer festival celebrating a local speciality

The Fête de la Tourte Pyrénéenne is a seasonal culinary event. This recurring summer festival celebrates a speciality typical of the Bigorre region and adds a local festive tradition to Galan’s history and trails. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates before travelling.
