A Celtic tumulus lies in the centre of Thil, while the Boucle de Bretx-Thil offers a different perspective on the local landscape. Historic buildings and visits focusing on farming, ceramics and plants add to these highlights. When planning your trip, it is worth considering each offering separately: the route and visits with their own booking or access requirements each call for different preparations.
Landscape along the Boucle de Bretx-Thil
The Boucle de Bretx-Thil passes through the Enjammes and Moundine plains, which are suitable for growing cereals. This open, agricultural landscape is a central part of the route. Other sights include scattered farmhouses, traditional villages, a château and a fountain. The route thus brings together views of the landscape with village and architectural highlights. If you want to explore not only individual buildings but also the surrounding agricultural landscape, the Boucle is a highlight in its own right.
Local history and dovecotes
The Celtic tumulus around which the town centre is clustered bears witness to the area's settlement three centuries before Christ. The Church of Saint-Laurent dates from the 14th and 17th centuries, marking a much later period. Two dovecotes can be distinguished by their different features: Brendies in Thil is a dovecote with a hipped roof; in Rue de Chastel is a dovecote of the “pied-de-mulet” type. In architectural terms, a named roof style and a specific type designation thus sit side by side.
Visits and local produce
Ferme d'En Barrus combines a visit to the farm and its livestock with a visit to the cheese dairy. The visit includes a snack made exclusively from farm produce, directly linking the culinary experience to the farm's products. As booking and access arrangements may change, check the current conditions before planning a visit.
Since 2014, Le Parc des Ricochets has offered pottery classes, workshops and demonstrations that are open to everyone. Classes and workshops offer a different focus from demonstrations: the programme includes both hands-on activities and opportunities to watch. Dates and availability may change, so check the current programme before planning your visit.
At L'ĂŽle aux Plantes, free visits for individuals lasting approximately 30 to 40 minutes are available by appointment by telephone only. The duration is a guide, whereas arranging an appointment by telephone is a requirement. As appointment arrangements may change, confirm the conditions by phone in advance. Aloe arborescens is grown at the farm, and cosmetics and juices are made from the plants grown there. The juices are produced entirely on site. The focus here is on growing plants and making products from them.
Fishing at Lac de Brendies
The private Lac de Brendies is dedicated to fishing and has a fishing platform. This differs from the visits and workshops: fishing is the focus at the lake. Before visiting, check the current conditions for access to the fishing area.
