Sauveterre-De-Comminges offers several clearly distinct ways to enjoy a stay: Carolingian art fragments and medieval architectural history, views over the valley and countryside, and activities involving cycling and plants. You can choose according to your interests: cultural history, sweeping landscape views, or getting active on a bike or discovering plants.

Heritage from Different Eras

Four fragments of choir-screen slabs are associated with the Chapelle Saint-Vincent de Gège. They date from the late 8th to early 10th century and therefore belong to the Carolingian period. They date to a time before the medieval castle architecture also associated with the village.

The Tour du Barry is the keep of the castle of the castellany of Sauveterre-de-Barcodan, built at the beginning of the 12th century. The Tour du Barry is also considered the oldest building in the village. The Chapelle Notre-Dame has a different connection to the castle’s history: it was built on the foundations of the former medieval castle. The choir-screen fragments, the keep and the chapel therefore represent different historical traces. The Tour du Barry is described by its function and its status as the village’s oldest building; the Chapelle Notre-Dame’s construction history points to the former castle foundations.

Landscape Views and Nature

The Natura 2000 site “chaînons calcaires du Piémont commingeois” includes part of the municipality of Sauveterre-De-Comminges. Two perspectives are available for taking in the landscape: the Chapelle Notre-Dame offers a panorama over the Garonne Valley, while the orientation table at Côte de Notre-Dame offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. One view focuses specifically on the valley, the other on the surrounding area in every direction. When choosing a viewpoint, you can use this difference to guide you towards the kind of landscape view you want.

Cycling and Discovering Plants

Route PC 9 – Autour de Cap d’Aristou is a difficult mountain-bike circuit. It is 18.6 kilometres long, has 518 metres of elevation gain and takes 1 hour 50 minutes. It runs mainly along singletrack sections, with some short, physically demanding climbs and playful descents. Taken together, the distance, elevation gain, duration and difficulty give a more complete picture of the route than its length alone.

Sauveterre-De-Comminges also has a pump track with banked turns, rollers and bends for practising agility and speed. The two cycling options are therefore described in different ways: the circuit is outlined by its distance, elevation gain and duration, while the pump track is described in terms of its features and training goals.

Activities focused on plants round out the selection. From 1 January to 31 December 2026, GaĂŻa Fior offers basket-weaving and plant-dyeing workshops, as well as walks to discover plants. On the botanical walks, participants learn to identify edible, medicinal and dye-producing plants. The workshops and walks have different focuses: the workshops involve crafts using plants, while the walks focus on identifying particular plants.
