Saint-Puy brings together a medieval town layout, distinctive buildings from later periods and viewpoints overlooking the Gèle Valley. You can explore the historic village of Saint-Puy independently at any time; guided group tours are available on request.

Medieval features in the townscape

The historic village of Saint-Puy combines features of three types of medieval settlement: sauveté, castelnau and bastide. Until the bastide of Fleurance was founded in 1274, Saint-Puy was the capital of the County of Gaure. This historical context is reflected in specific features of the layout: three parallel streets connect the church-centred core, which developed around the church, with the castelnau. As a result, this part of the village has the appearance of a bastide. The Vieille Tour, also known as the Tour de la rue Orbe, is a medieval tower within the grid of the former bastide. The historical settlement types can therefore also be understood in terms of the village’s layout.

The market hall connects the church-centred core with the grid of the former bastide. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, and its metal structure is very well preserved. The hall is so rare in the region that it merits special attention. Here, a more recent period of construction and the village’s historic layout meet in one place.

Another site reflecting rural life is the Cabane de vigne. The vineyard hut dates from the 1850s, has been preserved by the municipality and is one of the last surviving examples in the area. The vineyard hut and vineyards add a distinct connection to the landscape to the story of the village.

Valley views and nearby destinations

The Moulin de Montfaucon is a popular stop for walkers: from there, views stretch across the Gèle Valley and, on a clear day, as far as the Pyrenees on the horizon. The Hôpital de Morlan offers a different perspective. It stands on a promontory southwest of Saint-Puy and also offers a panorama over the Gèle Valley.

The Lavoir de Calamet is away from Saint-Puy, at Calamet in a small valley hollow. Its setting differs from the two viewpoints above the Gèle Valley, giving a visit to Calamet its own distinct landscape focus.

Walks and circuits

Walking and hiking are among the outdoor activities in Saint-Puy. The Circuit de Montfaucon is a 2.3 km circuit through Saint-Puy’s historic heritage; check the route distance again before setting out. Another circuit goes around Saint-Puy and its surroundings, is more than 2 km long and includes the Lavoir de Calamet. The focus of each route can help you choose: the Circuit is dedicated to the historic heritage, while the other route links Saint-Puy, its surroundings and the lavoir.
