Riscle brings together historic buildings, a varied events calendar and the landscape-shaping Adour. For a trip focused on culture, there are several places to start: the Église Saint-Pierre and other traces of the town’s history, recurring festivals and performances, and walks along the Canal de Riscle. You can choose which of these aspects will shape your stay based on your interests and the dates that suit you.

Historic sites and different layers of history

The Église Saint-Pierre stands on the hill of the former comital castle of Larroque. It has been mentioned since the 11th century and was consecrated in 1490. It is also classified as a French historic monument, or “Monument historique.” The mention, consecration year and classification each offer a different perspective on the church: its long history, a precisely dated event and its official status as a historic building.

La Halle also has a historic past. It stands on the site of a former commandery of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, which welcomed pilgrims on the Way of St James, the sick and the poor. The hall was renovated in 2013 and now hosts festivities for the commune of Riscle. Thus, the commandery’s former social role and the hall’s current community use coexist at this site as different layers of history.

Only the gateway remains of the Couvent de la Merci; the monastery was built in the mid-15th century. The Arènes Jean-Pierre Longepee offer a different architectural focus: they date from 1900 and have an elliptical shape. While the church and the Couvent highlight early building and local history, the Arènes can be associated with a specific construction year and a clearly described form.

Festivals and cultural events

The Spirale à Histoires festival takes place every year over the Pentecost weekend and lasts three days. The programme includes storytelling, theatre, circus, puppet theatre, street performances and concerts. The event brings together different forms of performance rather than focusing on a single art form. If you are planning your trip around this festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Riscle en fête is another annual festival: it takes place in summer and lasts five days. Bandas, dances, activities for children, meals, music and local traditions are part of the programme. Compared with the three-day festival over the Pentecost weekend, Riscle en fête is a longer summer event with its own wide-ranging programme. Dates and programme may vary from year to year.

The Petit Théâtre Spirale complements the festival calendar with a cultural season and regular performances. It also hosts a three-day festival in July. The Arènes Jean-Pierre Longepee host Course Landaise, Novilladas and other taurine performances, as well as festive events and concerts. For a specific event date, it is best to check the programme before your trip.

Market, walks and landscape

The Friday market takes place on Friday mornings under La Halle and in the surrounding area. This provides a regular weekly event alongside the festivals and stage programmes. If the market is part of your travel plans, check the times locally before planning your day around it.

The Canal de Riscle is suitable for walks and is lined with two washhouses. This combination of path and preserved buildings gives the walk a distinct local character: the washhouses are among the described features of the route, along with the canal itself. Those especially interested in historic heritage will find a different perspective here than at the church, commandery or Arènes.

The Adour shapes the landscape of Riscle. The river rises in the Pyrenees and flows into the Atlantic, so its significance extends beyond the town. Another natural feature is that Riscle is a habitat for the European pond turtle, a protected aquatic turtle. The river and turtle offer different points of interest: the Adour represents the landscape and course of the river, while the turtle represents the wildlife associated with Riscle.
