Discover Bretagne-d'Armagnac through three themes: the history of the bastide, the architecture of individual buildings, and the wine production of Domaine de Lartigue. The bastide's history dates back to the late 13th century; the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Château de Garderon are examples of specific architectural features. The winery adds another perspective through its vineyards, products and visitor experiences. You can tailor your stay to your interest in local history, architecture or wine.

Bastide history and the town's name

The bastide was founded towards the end of the 13th century under the name Villecomtal-d'Armagnac. In the 14th century, it was given the name Bretagne-d'Armagnac. This sequence marks the transition from the original name to the town's later name. Anyone interested in the development of medieval towns will find a concrete starting point for exploring local history here.

Turrets, tower and portal

Château de Garderon has several turrets. At the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, attention can shift from the overall structure to details around the entrance. The large tower is square at its base and flanked by three buttresses with dripstones. Buttresses are projecting structural supports on masonry; dripstones direct rainwater away from the wall. The north-facing portal features simple Gothic archivolts with smooth columns. Archivolts are curved architectural mouldings that frame a portal arch. The smooth columns give the portal a restrained appearance. The tower and portal illustrate two scales: the tower's overall form and the finer detailing of the entrance.

The Lavoir de la Gare

The Lavoir de la Gare was the village's first communal washhouse, where residents washed their clothes. Unlike the church and château, the focus here is on its use by the villagers: the washhouse was part of communal daily life. It was formerly known as the washhouse on the road to the railway station. The history of the lavoir therefore includes not only the building, but also a communal activity and an earlier local name.

Wine production and a visit to Domaine de Lartigue

Domaine de Lartigue covers 55 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of Bas-Armagnac; the vineyard area may change. The family winery produces Armagnac, Floc de Gascogne and CĂ´tes de Gascogne, and passes on know-how handed down over three generations. The vineyards describe the estate's landscape, while the three products listed make up its range. Domaine de Lartigue offers tours and tastings of its products; check the specific arrangements before you arrive. The Domaine's shop is opposite Bretagne-d'Armagnac village square. If you plan to visit, check the opening arrangements before your trip.
