Pierrefiche brings together traces of Cistercian history and hiking trails whose distances and estimated walking times make it easy to compare them. Château de Galinières and the Église de Pierrefiche d’Olt tell different stories about Bonneval Abbey. The Pont de Galinières and the Ruisseau de la Serre add a bridge and a distinctive watercourse to the picture. Planning your visit can therefore take in both historic sites and different ways to experience the landscape on foot.

Galinières: Monastic History and Architecture

Château de Galinières is a former monastic grange belonging to Bonneval Abbey. The fortified grange was dependent on the Cistercian abbey; it was first mentioned in 1163. The complex combines military, religious, and civic architecture. These distinct architectural aspects give the site a rich historical character.

The Pont de Galinières is also one of Pierrefiche’s listed historic structures: the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Serre was registered as a Monument historique on June 10, 2024. Its registration and the grange’s first mention point to different periods in the site’s history.

Access to Château de Galinières is subject to certain conditions. Part of the complex is open year-round to groups by prior reservation, or as part of guided tours organized in summer. The lower level of the keep houses an exhibition on the Cistercian abbeys of Rouergue and their holdings, from the Revolution to the present day. It is open when the owners are present. Please arrange your visit directly with them in advance.

The Church and Its History

The Église de Pierrefiche d’Olt is registered as a Monument historique. Dating from the 12th century, it is dedicated to Saint Peter and stands at the edge of the plateau, on the site of what was probably an earlier priory. In 1177, Bishop Hugues de Rodez gave the church to the Cistercian abbey of Bonneval. A more recent restoration has highlighted the Romanesque choir. The abbey’s connection is thus reflected in two different places: the former monastic grange and the church’s documented history.

Two Hikes, Two Timeframes

The Sentier de Pierrefiche – le chemin de Bellevue is a 9.8-kilometer hiking route with an estimated duration of three hours. The route is also designated for mountain biking and can be started in Pierrefiche. From the viewpoint, the view stretches across the Saint-Geniez basin and the Aubrac Mountains; a wayside cross dating from 1764 can also be seen there. The distance, estimated time, and views give this route a clearly defined profile.

The Sentier de Galinières is 13 kilometers long, with an estimated walking time of four hours and 30 minutes. It leads to the fortified farm complex of Galinières and offers panoramic views over the Serre Valley. The trail starts at Place de l’église in Pierrefiche, where parking is indicated. Check local parking conditions before planning your start, and ask about current trail conditions before setting off. For comparison, the estimated times are three hours for 9.8 kilometers and four and a half hours for 13 kilometers.

Watercourse and Getting There

At the Trou du Souci, part of the Ruisseau de la Serre disappears underground at the foot of Pierrefiche. The stream then flows into the Lot at Sainte-Eulalie-d’Olt. The watercourse can therefore be enjoyed as a distinctive feature of the landscape, regardless of which of the two hikes you choose.

If traveling by bus, the PIERREFICHE – Centre stop is a useful landmark: it is less than a ten-minute walk from the Église de Pierrefiche d’Olt and is served by the Saint-Geniez-d’Olt – Rodez routes. Check current routes and schedules before traveling. Information about the trails, cultural history, and bus stop offers different ways to plan your stay around the time available and your personal interests.
