On the edge of Lac de Pont de Salars, Le Vibal brings together the rural landscape of the Lévézou, sweeping panoramic views, a seasonally supervised beach and cultural attractions ranging from heritage conservation to sculpture. Fishing and orienteering are also possible in the commune; La Belle Verte sells organically grown fruit and vegetables directly from the farm. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering the town’s different highlights: landscape, water, culture and local shopping each add their own touch to your stay.

Landscape and panoramic views

Le Vibal is in the rural Lévézou, on the edge of Lac de Pont de Salars. The commune overlooks the Viaur Valley, while the lake and valley give the landscape distinct features. One specifically named viewpoint is the Statue de l’Homo Faber. It stands at an elevated spot and offers sweeping views: north to the peaks of the Cantal and the Monts de l’Aubrac, east to Puech du Pal, south to the Lévézou with its lakes and Mont Seigne, and west to Rodez and the Rouergue. The view thus connects the local Lévézou landscape with named distant destinations in all four directions.

Beach and activities

Plage des Moulinoches is a supervised swimming beach; lifeguard supervision is seasonal. Facilities include picnic tables, a playground and restrooms. Cold drinks and ice cream are sold during supervised hours over the summer holidays. Check the current offer in advance if you are planning a beach visit. This allows you to take the seasonal lifeguard supervision and limited sales hours into account when choosing when to visit.

Fishing is also possible in the commune of Le Vibal. The Les Moulinoches–Presqu’île de Montredon orienteering course can be completed alone or in groups; check the route materials before setting out. Alongside the beach, these offer additional activities to choose from in their own right, without having to combine them into a fixed itinerary.

Culture, heritage and sculptures

Église Saint-Martin-de-Cormières has been protected as a historic monument since 8 November 1988. The Statue de l’Homo Faber is five metres tall; its creation required around 1,000 hours of work. It is anchored in a concrete foundation weighing three tonnes. For this sculpture, both its height and foundation are concrete details that illustrate its scale.

The Maison Créative du Vibal exhibits wrought-iron figures created by Claude Villefranque. His sculptures took more than 18,000 hours of work to complete. This is a different emphasis from the details about the Statue de l’Homo Faber: here, the focus is on the material used for the exhibited figures and the work involved in Villefranque’s sculptures. Together with the protected church, these works showcase different aspects of Le Vibal’s culture.

Direct sales from the farm

La Belle Verte offers organically grown fruit and vegetables for sale directly from the farm in Le Vibal. Orders for farm collection can be placed on Fridays from 4 p.m. As collection arrangements may change, check the time in advance. This makes it possible to plan your shopping for a specific time of the week, while a seasonal beach visit is subject to different conditions.
