At an elevation of 1,128 metres, Lacalm is the highest village in the Aveyron département. It lies at the gateway to the Aubrac plateau. Specific attractions make it worth choosing as a destination: Sainte-Foi Church, the story of Clairon Rolland and a short family trail. The Saut du Loup waterfall is also a named natural attraction in the surrounding area.

Churches and architecture

Sainte-Foi Church is partly Romanesque, with parts dating from the 12th century. Its features include a barrel vault and carved capitals. Their depictions range from foliage and angels holding scrolls to warriors. The church was remodelled in the 15th, 18th and 19th centuries. Romanesque features and alterations made over several later centuries give the church a layered architectural history.

The story of Clairon Rolland

According to local tradition, Lacalm is the home of Clairon Rolland, regarded as a hero of the 1845 Battle of Sidi Brahim. According to the story, Emir Abd-el-Kader ordered him to sound the retreat to demoralise the last remaining fighters. Rolland, however, sounded the charge at the risk of his life. The story gives the name Clairon Rolland a specific historical context.

A statue by sculptor Eugène-René Arsal stands at the edge of the village in his honour. Clairon Rolland’s bugle and decorations can be seen at Lacalm town hall; his grave is in the cemetery. If you wish to see the items on display at the town hall, check local access arrangements in advance.

The Clairon-Rolland Micro-Museum is located in Lacalm cemetery chapel. It features an exhibition about Guillaume Rolland and a reconstruction of his life story. The cultural offering therefore includes not only the account of the battle, but also an exhibition and a biographical reconstruction.

Hiking and nature

The Sentier du « Petit Saint-Cloud » is about 3.5 kilometres long and takes approximately 1.5 hours as a family hike. The distance and duration help you estimate how much time to allow for the trail; both figures are approximate. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. Graphic artworks are placed along the trail and lead to a “treasure.” The route thus combines a clearly described distance with an additional point of interest.

The Saut du Loup waterfall is in the surrounding area of Lacalm. If you would like to include a natural attraction in your selection alongside the churches and local history, it is another named landmark.

Where to stay in Lacalm

The Lacalm municipal campsite has 25 pitches and is located beside a stream. Check the operating details before your trip so you can decide whether this option suits your stay.
