Prehistoric cave art, medieval architecture and activities such as hiking, climbing and horse riding offer a range of ways to explore Bédeilhac-Et-Aynat. The Grotte de Bédeilhac and the remains of the Château de Calamès represent different ways of discovering the past; the Tour de Montorgueil adds a hiking option. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether culture, a particular hike or active pursuits should shape your stay.
Cave art and underground landscapes
The Grotte de Bédeilhac is a protected prehistoric monument; it was designated as such by decree on 18 September 1929. It preserves prehistoric cave art associated with Cro-Magnon activity around 16,000 years ago. Vast chambers and spectacular stalactite formations shape its underground landscape. The cave can be visited on a guided tour lasting around an hour and a half. Check seasonal visiting arrangements before travelling. The cave therefore combines an archaeological subject with a specific visit format of a defined duration.
Traces of the Middle Ages
The Château de Calamès served as a military barracks for the County of Foix in the 13th century. Its remains include two sides of the keep and some building foundations. In the village of Bédeilhac, the Église Saint Martin offers another architectural form from the same period: the church is Romanesque and also dates from the 13th century. This allows you to explore medieval architecture from two different perspectives: the military use of the château and Romanesque church architecture.
Hiking to the Tour de Montorgueil
The Tour de Montorgueil is a medieval historic site at an altitude of 865 metres. An orientation table there offers panoramic views. The hiking route to the tower starts at the Calamès car park in Bédeilhac-et-Aynat; check the parking arrangements before travelling. The hike therefore offers several useful planning reference points: a specific starting point, the elevation of the destination and the panoramic views.
Horse riding and climbing
The Ferme Equestre de Thomas et Elsa offers rides lasting from half a day to several days on routes adapted to each rider's level. Beginners and experienced riders are welcome. The riding options can therefore be assessed in terms of duration and the level they are suited to. Another excursion focuses on discovering pastoral farming: it starts at the sheepfold and is accompanied by a shepherd and livestock farmer. Alongside choosing a ride, you can therefore also explore pastoral farming as a theme.
The climbing areas near Bédeilhac include a limestone sector with 166 routes graded from 4a to 8b, offering climbing for beginners as well as sport and alpine climbing. The Calamès climbing sector in Bédeilhac has 220 routes graded from 3c to 8b+ and offers climbing courses for beginners, sport climbing and adventure climbing. The two sectors differ in the number of routes, difficulty range and types of climbing—specific criteria for comparing them.
