Wisembach lies at the foot of the Col de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and is a popular transit point between the Vosges and Alsace. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Wisembach, you can plan your trip around two specific highlights: the landscape around the pass and the history reflected in named places and local accounts.

The pass, waterways and routes

The Blanc Rupt is formed where the Cude and Ménaupré streams meet. The pass places Wisembach in relation to the Vosges and Alsace; the Blanc Rupt reveals a different aspect of the landscape: the source of a named watercourse and its two tributaries. The local description thus brings together the region’s setting and a more specific geographical feature.

The Circuit de mémoire de la Côte 766 is a 9-kilometre loop between Lusse and Wisembach. Along the route are 21 signposted information points, remains of French and German installations, and sections of First World War trenches. The distance and number of points give you concrete reference points for planning; the historic remains define the route’s focus. You should check the route details again before your trip.

The “Sur les Hauteurs de Québrux” mountain-bike loop offers a different experience: it passes through woodland and hilly ridge sections, with views towards Wisembach. The Circuit de mémoire focuses on distance and information points, while the mountain-bike loop focuses on terrain and views. These different features can help you choose a trip idea based on the experience you want. You should also check the mountain-bike loop details again before your trip.

Circuit No. 9, “Le long de la Cude” – Le Sentier GALILEO, is also listed for Wisembach.

Memorial sites and local history

Two crosses known as the “Croix des Suédois” stand near the Col de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. They were erected in 1704 to commemorate battles of the Thirty Years’ War. Their date and purpose give these crosses a different historical context from the memorial sites associated with the First World War.

From September 1914, CĂ´te 766 was a strategic point on the Vosges front and the scene of intense fighting during the First World War. Near the Croix Le PrĂŞtre, there was a woodland chapel with a small bell tower, a large Croix de guerre on the gable, and a small cemetery containing the remains of a few Chasseurs Alpins. These historical features belong to accounts of the time; they do not describe facilities that exist today.

A local legend is also associated with the Croix Le Prêtre: according to the legend, it commemorates the death of a priest from Wisembach who was killed by a wolf on his way to Lusse. The legend tells of an individual’s fate, while the accounts of Côte 766 and the chapel focus on the context of the war.

The area’s religious history has its own point of reference. Processions in honour of the Virgin Mary, particularly for the Feast of the Assumption, were associated with the Grotte Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Wisembach. The former chapel is now the Salle Jeanne d’Arc. Together with the crosses and memorial sites, this part of the area’s history broadens the picture beyond military events.
