If you want to go hiking in Le Val-D'ajol, you can choose from routes with clearly different distances. Historic crosses, the Route des Chalots and regional specialties also give your stay its own focus. You can tailor your time here to hiking, cultural heritage or culinary discoveries.

Hiking: compare distances and time required

The Circuit découverte des croix is 7.5 kilometres long; it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to walk and has an elevation gain of 100 metres. The route is marked with a green ring and passes a cross dating from 1719 near the post office and a 17th-century cross below the church. This makes it a manageable route with specific stops tied to the area's history of crosses.

The Vallée d'Hamanxard et Rapaumont hike covers 11 kilometres, takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 390 metres. It is marked with a green disc and leads to a panoramic view over Faymont, Les Feuillées and Le Val-d’Ajol. Compared with the Circuit découverte des croix, it is both longer and involves more elevation gain; the walking times also help you compare how much time each route requires.

Another described hike leads to the Cascade de Faymont: it is 8.7 kilometres long, takes 3 hours, has an elevation gain of 255 metres and is marked with a blue circle. There is also an orienteering course in the Bois du Chanot, with routes for all ages that can be completed on foot or running. Check the current route details before setting out, especially if you have a particular hike in mind.

Chalots and routes through several communities

The Route des Chalots focuses on the chalots and extends across seven communities. Its marked route passes through Plombières, Le Val-d’Ajol and Girmont; it can be travelled by bicycle, car or on horseback. The chalots themselves are removable wooden granaries. They could serve as storage spaces for grain or food, as well as places to keep family heirlooms. For visitors interested in rural heritage, they offer a thematic perspective that goes beyond individual historic monuments.

Crosses, the church and a former priory

The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was listed in its entirety as a historic monument on 16 February 1926. The Chemin des Croix du Val-d'Ajol includes 145 crosses, three of which are classified as historic monuments. Two specific stops are on the Circuit découverte des croix: the cross dating from 1719 near the post office and a 17th-century cross below the church.

Individual crosses also have their own dates: the wayside cross in the hamlet of Les Chênes dates from the 16th century and was classified as a historic monument on 16 September 1908. The Croix de carrefour dite de Jaranceau dates from 1626 and received the same classification on 16 September 1908. The Prieuré d’Hérival is a former priory of notable architectural quality. It is privately owned; check access separately before visiting. The meadows around the priory are recognised for their ecological value and have been included in the inventory of sensitive natural areas of the Vosges department since 2005.

Regional cuisine and crafts

Andouille du Val-d'Ajol is made year-round by local butchers and charcutiers. Its quality has been protected by a registered trademark since 1984. It is also the centrepiece of the Foire aux Andouilles du Val-d’Ajol, held every year on the third Monday in February. The programme includes, among other things, a gourmet market, a costume parade, a book fair and inductions into the brotherhood. Check the date and programme for the year of your visit.

If you would like to try Andouille outside the festival dates, its year-round production offers another opportunity. At the La Val Heureuse brewery, you can sample beer and learn about its artisanal production. DE BUYER is also part of the local industrial history: founded in 1830, the company is part of France's industrial heritage and holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label.

Guided tours at the DE BUYER site, 25, Faymont, 88340 Le Val d'Ajol, last 1 hour and 15 minutes and take place only in spring and summer. Check the specific dates and current availability before making plans.
