Arches offers two distinct ways to explore: forest paths through wooded areas and traces of its paper and industrial history. This distinction is useful when planning your trip. The network of paths offers varying levels of difficulty; the Boucle patrimoine n°19 – les deux cantons, by contrast, is a clearly described cultural heritage route. There is also a historical walking tour and individual references to former economic activities. You can tailor your stay to your interests: observing nature, following a specific route, or exploring the town’s history.

Forest Paths and Landscape

Explore the local plant life along well-maintained forest paths through wooded areas. Some paths lead to peaceful clearings. The routes vary in difficulty: in addition to options for occasional walks, there are also choices for experienced hikers. When selecting a route, you can take your own hiking experience into account rather than treating the entire network as uniformly easy or challenging.

One notable piece of infrastructure is the Canal d’Alimentation du Réservoir de Bouzey. It crosses the municipality of Arches from east to west. The canal was completed in 1883 and is crossed by the Boucle patrimoine n°19 – les deux cantons. This older piece of infrastructure is also part of the cultural heritage route.

A Cultural Heritage Route

The Boucle patrimoine n°19 – les deux cantons starts and ends in Arches. It is 32 kilometres long, rated moderate, and has an elevation gain of 300 metres. The route passes the Papeterie d’Arches. The oldest paper mill in Arches dates back to 1492. The paper mill and its history provide two specific ways to explore Arches’ papermaking tradition.

Arches is located in a papermaking region. Expertise passed down over generations lives on through a school for papermaking professions. The paper theme therefore extends beyond historical dates: alongside a long craft tradition, there is also a way of passing on specialist knowledge.

Traces in the Townscape

Arches has a historical walking tour with interpretive panels. Visible traces include an old scale at the foot of the church hill, which was used to weigh goods. At a crossroads on the route, you can also see the manor house built in 1897 by the owner of the Kullmann weaving mill. The scale and manor house point to different aspects of economic life in the past: the weighing of goods and the connection to the weaving mill.

At the Château viewpoint, a panel helps visitors trace changes in the landscape since the end of the 19th century. While the scale and manor house point to former economic connections, the panel draws attention to the changing landscape. This raises different questions about local history: What traces did past activities leave, and how did the surrounding area change?
