Sierck-les-Bains combines a rich heritage with two very different ways to enjoy the outdoors: a challenging circular hiking trail and the Moselle Voie Bleue. When choosing your stay, it is therefore worth first asking whether you mainly want to visit historic buildings or set aside time for a longer route.

Heritage between fortress and church

The Château des Ducs de Lorraine is protected as a historic monument. One specific access detail is also important for visits: the viewing terrace, rampart walk and towers can only be reached by stairs. If you plan to visit these areas, take the stairs into account when making your decision. From April 1 to November 11, 2026, the programme includes self-guided and guided visits, a treasure hunt, an escape game and events. Offers may change seasonally; check the specific dates and formats before your visit.

The Tour de l’Horloge combines a medieval function with a later use: the building was a city gate in Sierck-les-Bains’ first fortified wall and dates from the 13th or 14th century. In the 20th century, it was converted into a museum. These two stages—the gate in the town’s fortifications and its later use as a museum—give the building a different historical emphasis from the Château.

The Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary also reveals its architectural history in its own way. It developed from a chapel intended for the knights of the Teutonic Order. Its solid, fortress-like exterior contrasts with an elegant Gothic-style interior. Its origins and architecture offer two different points of interest: the original chapel’s purpose and the contrast between its external appearance and interior.

Marienfloss: a surviving chapel and a long history

South of Sierck-les-Bains lies the Marienfloss sanctuary, founded in 1238 by Duke Matthieu II of Lorraine and Catherine de Limbourg. The present-day sanctuary is the surviving chapel on the Gospel side of a former three-aisled church. This makes a clear distinction between the chapel that stands today and the larger form of the former church. The continuity of pilgrimages is also part of its historical significance: despite further destruction and the ruins caused by the Thirty Years’ War, pilgrimages to Marienfloss continued. The foundation, church layout and history of pilgrimage thus tell different chapters in the story of the same sanctuary.

Circular hiking trail or Moselle route?

The Circuit des Quartzites is a challenging 12.5-kilometre circular hiking trail starting in Sierck-les-Bains. It passes through the wooded valley of the Montenach stream and over the heights of Sierck-les-Bains. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Lorraine Plateau, Stromberg and the Moselle Valley. The Circuit is listed as provisional; a temporary change due to forestry work should also be taken into account. Before setting out, check the route conditions and make sure the challenging distance fits into your day.

The Voie Bleue leaves Sierck-les-Bains following the winding course of the Moselle. Comparing the two routes, the Circuit stands out for its circular layout, distance and changes between valley and heights; the Voie Bleue is characterised by its course along the Moselle. Check the specific route conditions for this route too before setting off. This will help you decide whether you would prefer to include a challenging, clearly defined hike or a route along the river in your trip.
