Chérisey combines architectural history and hiking as two distinct focuses for planning a trip. The former seigneurial chapel is part of the Romanesque church, consecrated in 1143; the 15.8-kilometer “Autour des Festen” hiking route passes through the village. The history of the Château de Chérisey and evidence of much earlier origins add to the picture. This makes it possible to shape your stay around sacred architecture, château history, and outdoor activity.
Church, Chapel, and Château
The former seigneurial chapel adjoins the church of Chérisey and is part of the Romanesque church, which was consecrated in 1143. On November 16, 1988, the chapel was listed as a historic monument. The dates mark different milestones: 1143 refers to the consecration of the church, while 1988 marks the chapel’s protected status. This distinction is useful for context, since the consecration year is not a general construction date for every individual part of the building. Alongside the church’s consecration date, the former chapel therefore also has a specifically dated protected status.
The present-day Château de Chérisey stands on the site of an older fortified house built by Renaud de Chérisey, son of Henry de Chérisey, around 1219 to 1220. This date range applies to the predecessor house, not automatically to the present château: it describes the history of the site, not a construction date for the current château. An entry dated December 19, 1986, protects the château’s entrance gate, dovecote, the main building’s façades and roofs, and the orangery. The façades and roofs of the main building are expressly included in the protection; the gate, dovecote, and orangery are also named individually. This allows the site’s development to be distinguished from the specific scope of protection when considering the château’s history.
The origins of Chérisey are considered to predate the first written mention in 775, based on the remains of a Roman villa within the municipality. The year 775 is therefore not a founding date, but the first written mention; according to this account, the origins go further back. The Church of Saint-Barthélemy dates from 1866. Together with the consecration of the Romanesque church in 1143 and the fortified house built around 1219 to 1220, these provide several clearly distinct dates. They trace a path from Roman remains through early written records and medieval building history to a 19th-century church.
Hiking Route and Landscape
The “Autour des Festen” hiking route is 15.8 kilometers long and passes through Chérisey. The distance gives you a concrete point of reference for weighing up how much hiking to include in your day’s plans; a route of this length can be considered either a main activity or a separate item on your itinerary. This offers a different approach to planning a trip from exploring individual historic buildings.
The Chérisey golf course is set on 55 hectares of parkland with centuries-old trees and a château from the 18th century that is listed as a historic monument. The grounds, trees, and château add a landscape perspective to the architectural history. Chérisey thus brings together different themes: the history of the church, chapel, and château; the hiking route through the village; and the golf course’s parkland.
