Explore Fresnes-Au-Mont through its art trails, forest and distinctive traces of local history. Two walking routes differ in length and number of artworks; there is also a 19th-century church, a former blockhouse and historic buildings at the Prairie de Louvent. These different highlights give you practical points of reference when planning your stay.

Comparing the Art Trails

The Circuit de la Croix Camonin is a 14-kilometre art trail marked in pink, with 32 artworks. It passes through the village of Fresnes-Au-Mont. The Circuit des Trois Fontaines is an 8-kilometre circular route marked in red, with 22 artworks, and runs through the Louvent plain. Their lengths and numbers of artworks make it easy to compare the two routes: the Croix Camonin is six kilometres longer and has ten more works. The different trail markers also help you tell the routes apart.

The Circuit des Trois Fontaines is crossed by the D901. Along the way, the Prairie de Louvent shapes the landscape: three small streams join at the bottom of a narrow, grassy valley to form a brook. The valley marks the boundary between Fresnes-Au-Mont, Lahaymeix and Les Paroches. The landscape and artworks offer different highlights, so the two circular routes do not present the same picture of the area.

There is art in the communal forest beyond these two routes, too: around twenty works by Vent des ForĂŞts can be found along its paths. The seven Vent des ForĂŞts circular routes are accessible on foot and by mountain bike. The trail maps show, among other things, parking areas and large picnic tables. This makes it easier to distinguish between the individual routes and the wider range of trails in the communal forest.

Forest and the Barrois Landscape

Forest covers a large part of the commune: around two-thirds of Fresnes-Au-Mont’s 15.89 square kilometres is wooded. The forest lies on the limestone-rich Barrois Plateau. The landscape is shaped by gentle, shallow valleys and a diverse range of trees. The three streams at the Prairie de Louvent offer another glimpse of the surroundings: waterways gather in a narrow valley that also marks the commune boundary.

The installation “Terrain d’occurrences” tells a different story about the landscape. It is located in a former quarry, where materials for road construction and limestone for making lime were once extracted. The quarry is therefore more than just a backdrop for the installation: it is a place whose former use is connected to the materials found in the surrounding area.

Buildings and Local History

The Église Saint-Laurent was built in 1834 to plans by the architect Théodore Oudet, who lived from 1793 to 1865. Rows of 19th-century funerary monuments stand in the cemetery. These include the stele of Abbé Cordier (1833–1933), decorated with two monstrances and a chasuble as symbols of the priesthood, as well as the grave of Captain Audibert, who fell in 1914. The church and cemetery reflect different forms of local remembrance.

Another historic point along the Circuit de la Croix Camonin is a blockhouse near Fresnes-Au-Mont. It was built in April 1916 from stones and metal rails; sheets covered with concrete were also among the construction materials. At the Prairie de Louvent, the Ferme de Louvent preserves a 17th-century residential building and an agricultural building erected around 1820. The latter is visible from the viewpoint. The two buildings date from different periods, while the viewpoint offers a view of the agricultural building.

The local history reaches back much further: Fresnes-Au-Mont was first mentioned in 904 in a charter issued by Louis III. In it, the king granted the village to the Vieux-Moutier priory in Saint-Mihiel. Vent des ForĂŞts is a nationally recognised centre for contemporary art. Since 1997, it has been run by an association bringing together six villages with agricultural and forestry traditions: Fresnes-Au-Mont, Lahaymeix, Nicey-sur-Aire, Pierrefitte-sur-Aire, Dompcevrin and Ville-devant-Belrain.

Planning Your Stay

You can pick up the Vent des Forêts walking map from a box outside the town hall in Fresnes-Au-Mont. Together with the information about the routes, trail markers and landscape, it can help you plan a visit focused on the area’s art and nature. The trail map also shows where parking areas and large picnic tables are located. If you are choosing between routes, their lengths and numbers of artworks provide a practical comparison; the buildings and local history offer further discoveries.
