The surroundings of Pas De La Casa offer several distinct facets: hikes starting from Porta, the landscape of the Vallée du Campcardos, and cultural and historical connections. The Randonnée des Trois Nations is defined by its distance and summit destinations; the Vall de Campcardós hiking trail is identified by its starting point on the banks of the Querol. The area also features a birch forest and the history of a former summer pasture. This means you can give different emphasis to nature and cultural interests during your stay.

Hikes from Porta: Summit Destinations and a Valley Trail

The Randonnée des Trois Nations starts in Porta and is a 12.5 km out-and-back hike. It allows you to climb Pic d’Envalira and Pic Nègre d’Envalira and is considered technically undemanding. Its distance, out-and-back route and two named summit destinations give this hike a clear focus. As an extension, it can be continued to the Porteilla Blanca d’Andorra on the border between France, Andorra and Spain. This adds a specific border connection to the summit destinations.

The Vall de Campcardós hiking trail has a different starting point: it begins at the car park on the banks of the Querol River in the municipality of Porta. The Randonnée des Trois Nations focuses on distance, its out-and-back route and summit destinations; here, the starting point by the river is the key landmark. You can therefore choose between the two hikes based on different priorities: the measured route with its summit destinations, or the valley trail’s starting point on the Querol.

Birch Forest and Autumn Colours in the Vallée du Campcardos

The largest and highest-altitude birch forest in the Pyrénées-Orientales department lies on the shaded slope of the Vallée du Campcardos. In autumn, the dense birch trees create a particularly colourful landscape. The trail also features a diverse range of plant life. The valley thus combines a distinct seasonal highlight with the rich flora along the way. If the landscape is a key factor when choosing when to travel, autumn offers a specific point of reference: the colourful effect of the birch trees is explicitly characteristic of this season.

Summer Pasture and Chapel: History in the Surrounding Area

The names of the landscape also tell the story of its former use. Campo Cardos was a summer pasture dating back to the 13th century. It gave its name to the Vallée du Campcardos and Puig du Campcardos. The valley and mountain therefore share a historical connection: both names derive from the same former pasture.

The Chapelle Saint-Martial in the hamlet of Cortvassill, just above Porta on the RN20, is another cultural landmark. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Martial. Its precise location and dedication add a cultural dimension to the area, alongside its hiking and landscape attractions.
