In the Carnac Valley, hiking goes hand in hand with the history of the landscape and its settlement. Options range from a short circular trail focused on birds to a five-day long-distance route. The valley is also known for its relatively deep soils and numerous wells; excavated tumuli add to its historical interest. When planning, first decide whether you are looking for a single short hike or a multi-day tour.

Hiking options for different timeframes

The “Oiseaux des causses et des gorges” circular trail is 2.8 km long, rated very easy and takes 1 hr 30 min. Access it from Carnac via the D43/D16 towards Rieisse and Roc des Hourtous. The trail follows in the footsteps of bird species that illustrate the biodiversity of the Grands Causses, including vultures and smaller woodland birds. If you are looking for a shorter outing with a specific nature theme, this route offers a clearly defined option. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The GRP® Demi Tour du Méjean is on a different scale: this moderately difficult long-distance route is 80.3 km long and designed to take five days. It passes through the commune of Mas-Saint-Chély. In the Carnac Valley, it includes a cultural heritage section titled “La dame blanche d'Anilhac”. Comparing the routes can help you plan your time: one is a short circular trail, the other a multi-day hike covering a considerably greater distance. Their stated difficulty levels also differ. This can help you choose the right tour based on the time you have planned and your hiking interests.

Soils, wells and settlement history

The Carnac Valley is one of the most fertile areas of the Causse Méjean. Its relatively deep soils and numerous wells are also linked to its history of settlement: more than a third of the population of the Causse Méjean once settled there. Caussignac has 17 wells. These details add another dimension to the valley beyond its hiking trails and show how closely its history is connected to local soil and water conditions.

Excavated tumuli and a cultural heritage section

Some burial mounds, known as tumuli, have been excavated in the valley. One is thought to date from the Iron Age. “La dame blanche d'Anilhac” is the name of the GRP® cultural heritage section in the Carnac Valley and points to another archaeological story. Large quantities of jewellery were found alongside burnt bones at the site of the “dame blanche d'Anilhac”. The finds made it possible to draw conclusions about the sex and social status of the woman buried there. The valley thus offers both general traces of early settlement and a specific, named archaeological find.
