Ceramics shape a visit to the town

Nearly 40 workshops run by potters, ceramicists and other craftspeople are open to the public year-round in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie; their number may change over time. Since 1992, the town has held the «Ville et Métiers d’Art» label. For travelers who want to discover ceramics as more than museum exhibits, the workshops offer another perspective on local craftsmanship. A visit can be planned around studios, collections and cultural events, while hikes offer a different focus.

The Musée de la Poterie Méditerranéenne is housed in a former 16th-century oil mill. It covers about 400 m² over two floors with eleven rooms and contains more than 1,200 pieces of functional ceramics. On display are traditional glazed ceramics from Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, as well as pipes and Terraillettes from the Job Clerc manufactory. The museum also displays 700 glazed, unglazed and functional ceramic pieces from around the Mediterranean. In this way, local ceramic traditions are presented alongside a broader Mediterranean perspective.

Buildings, Views and Cultural Events

The Tour de l’Horloge also offers a glimpse into the town’s history: its base dates from the 11th century. Visitors can climb a staircase to the third and top floor. From there, the panorama stretches across the Uzège region and the Duchy of Uzès. Those seeking culture beyond museum collections will find La Maison, Capitale de la Céramique, a public visitor and information center at the entrance to the historic town center. A work by each of the town’s craft workshops is represented there. Check the current arrangements before your visit.

The Salle d’exposition Joseph Monier hosts exhibitions including the Concours de la Jeune Céramique, FRAC and the Journées Métiers d’art. The Terralha ceramics trail offers a different kind of presentation: it brings around 20 European artists to the town center. Their works are temporarily displayed in private spaces set up as exhibition venues. The participating artists and venues may change from one edition to the next. The town also features in a broader cultural context: Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is included as an attraction on the World Heritage Journeys of the European Union’s «L’Europe antique» route, where it is presented together with the Pont du Gard.

Holiday Activities and Trails

During school holidays, Atelier Terre offers introductory sessions in ceramics and various clay-modeling techniques. The activities are suitable for beginners, families and children aged four and over. Course availability and dates may change, so check the specific options for your chosen holiday period.

For a hike, the La Madone loop offers clear distance and duration information: it is 7 km long, with a stated walking time of two hours. The Massargues loop offers a different highlight, with a viewpoint over Roman millstone quarries. Another natural feature is the Aven de Valorgues, a natural resurgence spring. During heavy rainfall, water emerges there from underground. The options range from ceramics and architectural history to exhibitions, walking trails and a natural phenomenon, without requiring the different outings to be combined into a fixed route.
